General Discussion / Petrol engines to get GPF from June 2018
« on: February 13, 2018, 08:18:11 PM »
Just picked this up from the Škoda Forum.

All new petrol vehicles sold from June 2018 will need to have Gasoline Particulate Filters fitted under the latest Euro 6d regulations!  It is no longer just diesels that have to worry about these devices.

They are needed because modern petrol engines making use of direct injection are much ‘dirtier’ than those using indirect injection - in some cases by a factor of 10,000!

It also means a reduction in engine power as well - for example the VW 280bhp petrol engine drops to 272bhp in the summer.

What seems to be unclear from the comments is what happens to unregistered dealer stock cars after that date?  Commentators have pointed at new registrations rather than new builds.  I can understand it being a ‘built after date......’ but some cars remain unsold for months.  Are Dealers going to pre-reg anything bought speculatively by them, or to meet their quota numbers?

General Discussion / New MOT in 2018 - will check Cat/DPF
« on: October 29, 2017, 12:09:48 PM »
DVSA is changing the MOT from next Spring (2018) and will now include checks that the Cat and DPF are both fitted and working on diesel vehicles.

No details on the ‘how’ yet, but it is on the way. It will be more than a physical check as these how now been proved worthless if the exhaust looks OK.  I am presuming there will be a modified ‘smoke test’ which will be able to look at the particulates levels or some other exhaust stream testing.

As is the case now, a garage cannot be prosecuted for removing either but motorists can be for driving a car without them.  With more than 1,400 motorists caught in the last couple of years and a lot of focus on diesel emissions this was bound to happen eventually.

Not yet on the UK DVSA website, but this appeared in the news overnight....problem with front occupancy detector mats.  Could affect airbag deployment.

On the light side / Blonde PE Teacher.....
« on: October 13, 2017, 10:24:51 PM »
A blonde lady gets a job as a physical education teacher of 16 year olds.

She notices a boy standing alone, while all the other kids are running around having fun kicking a football.

She takes pity on him and decides to speak to him.

'You ok?' she asks.

'Yes,' he replies.

'You can go and play with the other kids, you know,' she says.

'It's best I stay here,' he says.

'Why's that, sweetie?' asks the blonde.

The boy looks at her and says: "Because I'm the goal keeper!"

On the light side / Don’t mess with Seniors!
« on: October 12, 2017, 10:04:13 PM »
A retired couple returned to a Mercedes dealership where the salesman had just sold the car that they had been keen on buying to a beautiful, leggy, busty blonde in a mini skirt and halter top.

The old man was visibly upset. He spoke to the salesman sharply: "Young man, I thought that you said you would hold that car until we raised the £55,000 asking price. Yet I just overheard you close the deal for £45,000 to that lovely young lady there. And if I remember rightly you insisted there was no way you could discount this model."

The salesman took a deep breath, cleared his throat and reached for a large glass of water. "Well, what can I tell you? She had the cash ready, didn't need any financing help, and Sir, just look at her, how could I resist?", replied the salesman grinning sheepishly.

Just then the young woman approached the senior couple and gave the car keys to the old man.
"There you go", she said, "I told you I could get that idiot to lower the price. See you later, and Happy Birthday dad"

Once again ... don't mess with seniors ...  :P

General Discussion / Driver's Airbag Recall - E53 and other models
« on: September 05, 2017, 07:44:52 PM »
Looks like BMW are widening the recall for a driver's airbag issue.  It was only for 2002/3 builds but we have now had a recall for our 2005 E46 as part of the same issue so the scope has got larger.

It has allegedly been caused by airbags in the US detonating but throwing metal shrapnel into the driver!

This had already been flagged in the Forum, but I thought I would wave a flag to say it has gone wider now and other owners may get recall notices - assuming BMW know who the Owners are.

It is the second recall in three years for early noughties built cars and affects millions of vehicles globally - not just BMW - apparently.  The last recall we had was because the explosive was found to be damp in the passenger airbags gas generator.  More pffftttt than bang!

General Discussion / Diesel Emissions.......
« on: July 21, 2017, 08:00:02 PM »
Well with VAG, Merc and Renault 'revising' their diesel car emissions via recalls I suppose it was inevitable that BMW would be alleged to be part of the disguising game.  Part of the issue is of course that the EU emissions standard tests are done at 20°C and many countries have climates where the average temperature is below that so the emissions systems never kick in properly.  This makes the testing regime useless - as we already know.

The hornet's nest kicked over by VAG looks like it is going to be buzzing for a while yet.

Have any of the members on here with the original version of the E71 built after Feb 2011 with either 4 or 5 seater versions got adjustable head restraints in the rear?

Our little man has got to the next stage car seat but all those we have looked at which have the proper backrest (rather than just using a booster cushion) cannot be used because the rear head restraint is fixed in position and isn't removable.

I think when this model was designed there was no need to use anything other than a booster cushion with youngsters (to be banned from Dec 2016 under EU regs for new seats sold for for kids under 150cm though parents can go on using existing cushions if they have them).  These new rules require different seats with proper backs and therein lies the issue I have.

If the later build cars have adjustable/removable rear head restraints then I may change the car backrest, or little man will have to go in the front only.

For those with E71s who aren't yet aware of the problem, you need to look at it carefully as the only option we have is an inadequate booster, or to put him in the front where we don't have ISOFIX so he isn't as protected!

For now the X6 will use his existing seat (which he will soon be too big for) and the Skoda will have the latest seat.

Very silly design by BMW!

On the light side / News Flash........
« on: December 31, 2015, 05:48:22 PM »
News Flash from Portsmouth.......

The Navy intercepted a boatload of people off the South coast of England today.
This placed the Navy in an awkward position, as the boat was not heading to, but away from the UK,
towards The Continent.
Another surprise finding was that it was loaded with white British Citizens, who were all seniors of
pensionable age.
Their claim was that they were trying to get to Asia so as to be able to return to the UK as illegal
immigrants, and therefore be entitled to far more benefits than they were receiving as legitimate
British pensioners.

The Navy it is believed gave them food and water and assisted them on their journey.

We are booking on the next boat out.

Let me know if you want to come.
