Other Marques / Mk6 golf battery low
« on: January 11, 2018, 01:43:49 AM »
Sons golf has been standing idle over the Xmas period. Tried starting it today and nothing. Still able to operate the central locking doors.
Should I
1. buy a cheap old school charger
2. Use the jump leads across my X3 to his
3. Buy a fancy (expensive)  ctek intelligent charger

Until now, his battery has been fine as it only stands still a day or 3 at most.

Your opinions would be helpful.
If I do use my car to jump start his, where would the points be? (across battery in rear, or points under bonnet)

General Discussion / Map upgrade
« on: December 30, 2017, 01:55:25 PM »
My 64 plate X3 has never had a map update and yesterday I bought the map updates from BMW.
Having never done this before, can someone point me in the right direction.

What size and make of USB drive is required?
Can I go from 2014 straight up to 2018 maps or have to step up?
How long does the update take and what happens if my journey isn’t that long or the update gets disturbed? (Thinking firmware that can brick a device)

General X3 Forum (F25) / The dreaded BONG
« on: August 03, 2016, 06:04:22 PM »
2 miles from home, and front offside has lost pressure.
Got home and pumped it up - definitely a  puncture. Rang ProTyre in Slough and they offered to look at it. It has something resembling a razor blade stuck in the tyre. Can't be fixed they say.

So all 4 tyres are runflats with 4mm tread.

Rang BMW Maidenhead, and spoke to the tyre technician, he was a great guy and said the following
1. 4mm tread means I'm right on the limit of putting 2 new front tyres on with 8mm tread. He recommended I change all 4.
2. I asked if I would invalidate my warranty if I changed to non runflats, and he said no it wouldn't as long as I stuck with Pirelli,Bridgestone, continental (basically a premium tyre brand) , and not in his words some cheap tyres.

I have a tyre repair kit at home, and am going to try and repair the tyre now at home (after my cup of tea). My thinking is I may as well try to repair it and learn along the way. Even if I make a total hash of it, well the tyres are going to be replaced anyway.
The cost will be offset somewhat by my selling the 3 part worn runflats at 4mm tread.

Does anyone have any tyre recommendations (non runflat) , I always said I was going to try this route and the fact my warranty won't be void has forced my hand anyway.

Comments and recommendations welcome ....

I figured the Macan would win over the the Jag,  but disappointed they used the Merc GLC instead of the X30d.  I think it would have been far closer

General X3 Forum (F25) / Increased shoulder wear
« on: May 22, 2016, 11:19:27 AM »
Washing the car yesterday, and doing my usual weekly vehicle check.  I notice the front tyres are starting to wear a little more on the outside shoulders, compared to the centre area.  They are set to 32psi which is the recommended pressure on the B pillar.
The car has done 8000 miles and drives straight, no pulling.

Should i increase the psi?
I had it set to 34psi front/36psi rear initially, but the main dealer lowered them to 32f/33r when it went in for a window seal replacement.

What psi do you set on 19" staggered rft's?
Do you notice increased shoulder wear?

General X3 Forum (F25) / Winter wheels and tyres being offered to me
« on: April 11, 2016, 12:01:28 AM »
My current 19" staggered wheels have TPMS, and a set of winter 17" wheels that I am being offered may or may not have the sensors? ( will ring the guy tomorrow to get more information)
Those of you that run a winter set, is this a big deal?
Should I buy the sensors and fit them to the winter wheels?
If they are genuine winter wheels, will they have them anyway?
Can I just keep a regular check over the winter months myself as they come with winter runflat tyres?
Sorry for the newbie question regarding a winter setup, but until I quiz the guy selling them, I have no further information

General X3 Forum (F25) / F25 rear bumper guard
« on: March 28, 2016, 08:54:57 AM »
Has anyone fitted something like this to protect the paintwork on the top lip of the rear bumper.  I'm super careful when loading &  unloading luggage, but it's only a matter of time before teenage kids or a busy wife put some scratches in.

Has anyone actually used it in anger?
Does it work?
Did it seal the puncture?
Any experiences of it welcome. Thank you.

General X3 Forum (F25) / F25 middle seat extender
« on: March 15, 2016, 11:34:36 PM »
We need an extender for when we have our neice in the car, and it becomes difficult to have her buckled up with two other rear passengers.
I bought one from ebay,  but it only clips into the window seats.
Any ideas?
Is this true of all beemers?
Why would they make the middle receptacle different?

General X3 Forum (F25) / Buying a lifting jack

Can anyone point me in the right direction.
Is the F25 jack the same as an E53 or E60 or other model?
