Buy and sell / **SOLD** Avin 10.25" android screen for E70 CCC
« on: June 22, 2018, 08:03:21 PM »

After deciding to part with our cherished M-sport 35d (mileage getting a little high for us), and an abortive Ebay sale, I am contemplating putting the car back to standard, which means removing the rather brilliant 10.25" Avin android screen and offering it to Xdrivers.

I bought this new direct from Avin in September 2017 for our pre-LCI CCC equipped car.

There are umpteen threads on the web about these units not working properly, but if you manage your expectations (android 4.4, minimal ram etc) it works rather well.

The best benefits we had were:
- Fantastic large screen that vastly improved the OEM rear camera picture.
- Great online maps (Waze is favourite) - but you need to link it to a wifi hotspot for this to work.
- Bluetooth music streaming
- Easy switching between OEM and 'NBT-like' screen - we used both interchangeably
- Bluetooth music
- Video playing (Plex online was particularly good)

It's really simple to fit - instructions are here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5csZBhSUqg2Z0pvc1V6WjNVQUE/view?usp=sharing

I paid $549 (about £420) for it shipped, and will only remove it if I get reasonable offers here.
Its in great condition (I removed the rear hidden SD card cover as it was a pain to open each time I wanted to add something), and all the parts are there to connect it up.

Let me know your offers...

General X5 Forum (E70) / Comprehensive Warranty - 100k miles
« on: June 10, 2018, 09:37:58 PM »

Had the car 4 years as an AUC, and have taken the full BMW insured warranty every year sine AUC cover stopped. It's been a good investment - sunroof, small turbo, sat nav, water pump, suspension airbag all replaced.

Renewal due end of this week. Car has 93k miles - so still eligible for comprehensive cover, but will clock 100k this year (in about 8 months, I reckon).

Question: If bought now, does it provide comprehensive cover for 12 months, or until 100k is reached and then revert to driveline cover only?

If the latter then its an expensive option for only part-year comprehensive cover.

Wording of policy:

Comprehensive cover provides our highest level of Insured Warranty protection and covers the majority of mechanical and electrical components in your vehicle.
Failure of covered components for wear and tear is also included up to 100,000 miles from registration.
Comprehensive Insured Warranty is not available for vehicles with over 100,000 mileage (at the time of purchasing the warranty)

Any thoughts / experiences welcome.

UPDATE: Spoken to Allianz this morning. Basically whole car is covered for whole year, but at 100k 'wear and tear' items no longer covered. They couldn't specify what 'wear and tear' meant on something like the transfer box - if it went at 102k, is that beyond the expected lifespan of the unit and therefore not covered? It's down to the dealer diagnosis apparently.

UPDATE 2: Car is now sold, as we decided full warranty cover was essential. Now picked up a 2011 SE AUC with just about every toy on it. Nicer ride than M-Sport, and steering is much lighter (not sure if that's a good thing or not yet...)

General X5 Forum (E70) / Can I borrow some Snow Chains?
« on: March 15, 2018, 02:01:54 PM »
Hi All

Travelling to Alps over Easter. Winter tyres fitted on 19" rims (on 2009 35d M-sport). I'm hoping not to need chains but would like a set in the boot to satisfy local Gendarmes if required.

Problem is finding snow chains to fit the 255/50/19(F) or 285/45/19(R) size. I understand BMW recommend fitting to rear only.

As I'll only need them for a week, I wondered if someone had a set I can borrow or point me at a reasonably-priced set that would fit?

Problems / Problem with 'Favourite' buttons
« on: November 18, 2017, 08:17:43 PM »
This is about the favourite / shortcut buttons numbered 1-8 below the heater controls. Its on a 2009 35d (CCC not CIC).

So, for one reason or another, I want to programme button 8 as the ipod input (via the usb/aux jack in the armrest), and button 7 as the aux input (the alternate to the USB device in the menu).

Button 8 is fine - select the ipod input, long press on button and all working (can be selected by pressing). Now go to select the aux input, long press on button and it is stored as 'aux'. However, pressing the button to select this input results in 'the function selected is not currently available'.

Can anyone with a similar CCC setup see if the can get a shortcut to aux working via the buttons please?

General X5 Forum (E70) / Battery Issues and Dealer Woes
« on: September 19, 2017, 06:44:44 PM »
When will I ever learn?

Background: 2009 XDrive 35d purchased AUC in June 2015, still under warranty. In retrospect, there were always hints of a dying battery with random clock and date resets and radio always on mute when starting, but it got problematic enough to take to local dealer (not the supplier) in October 2016. Given the 'driving style (mainly short runs)' excuse and a bill for wasting their time. It got progressively worse over the winter and this summer, with even long drives barely giving the car 20 minutes with the door open before a dead battery. Checked battery (Bosch Silver <5 years old) and alternator (14.4v when running), although load test not undertaken.

Totally fed up, so checked again, and realised Carly was indicating the registered battery type was 90ah AGM, but the Bosch is lead-acid...

Back to dealer for checking - "you've got the wrong battery fitted, and it is now kaput - that'll be £286 to replace plus our diagnostic fee". Hmm - so the car was supplied AUC with the wrong battery/coding, and they didn't check this in October last year? Apparently not. This is the same dealer that got my sunroof fault so wrong (see other posts) and I should have known.

Anyway, purchased (much) cheaper 110ah lead acid battery, recoded and registered the battery to the car. The coding obviously worked as the running voltage is 13.8 - 14.0, rather than the previous 14.4. I had to buy a new vent tube as whoever had fitted the previous lead acid battery hadn't bothered...

I can only assume that the miscoding (dealer replacing battery prior to AUC and not bothering to re-register?) was pushing too many volts through the battery eventually wearing it out.

Hopefully all fixed (and another lesson learned), although the final proof will be if our 'driving style' flattens it quickly.

BTW - bought on of those hand-held jump starters as a backup over the summer and worked perfectly both times it was needed. Highly recommended.

Problems / 2009 Ambient Lighting - S563
« on: August 12, 2017, 12:18:35 PM »

This may be barking up a wrong tree, but should my 2009 35d with S563 'Light Package' have the ambient lighting for the interior door handles and the door pockets? If so, they have never worked on any of the doors since I've owned it (2 years + now).

I would be grateful if owners with similar age cars with the same package can confirm/deny they have such lighting?

I haven't removed the door panel to check, but there is a clear plastic strip running above the door pockets (which I think is the 'optical channel'). I've taken off the handle inner cover, but can't see a light source.

Presumably, if it take off the door panel, I'll be able to see if the LED units are there (according to RealOEM there are 2 for each door). How hard is it to take the panel off?

Problems / Thermostat & Warranty...
« on: March 02, 2017, 12:44:14 PM »
Hi All

Recently started looking at the DPF regen logs for my car (2009 35d) and had some mild concern that it hadn't happened for quite some time. Looking deeper into the problem, there were a couple of clues - all glow plugs and controller replaced a few months ago (all failed/weak) and engine temp never getting above 70 degrees.

So back to the dealer...

Me: The car isn't getting up to temperature. It won't go above 70 degrees and the optimum operating range is around 88 degrees.
Them: Certainly Sir, we'll look into it.

4 hours later
Them: Car is all ready.
Me: Great - did you have to change the thermostat.
Them: No, we turned the heater system up
Me: Why?
Them: You said the car wasn't getting up to temperature, so we turned the internal heater up.
Me: The engine temperature! Not the cabin temperature. Why would I want the cabin temperature to be 88 degrees?
Them: Oh  :o

1 day later
Them: Car all checked and it is fine.
Me: Great - what is the engine temperature now?
Them: Its within operating parameters
Me: What are the parameters?
Them: I can't tell you but the mechanic said they couldn't find any recorded faults
Me: Give me back my car and don't touch anything else!  >:(

So, without any recorded faults, there is no problem to fix and the dealer won't do anything. Given the main thermostat is a PITA to change and there is no EGR one, I'll probably go to an indy to get it changed.

The question though is when I do this, and find a fault with the thermostat, could I claim it under the extended warranty?

Problems / Bluetooth & Iphone Confusion
« on: June 18, 2016, 06:30:16 PM »

Getting very confused by what should and shouldn't work in my car.

2009 pre-LCI (CCC) 35d. Has USB/audio in centre console (works well with ipod), bluetooth for call only (no music streaming) and phone cradle.

Would like to add Tune2Air to work alongside ipod by sharing the USB/Aux sockets, but they don't play well together if connected to a USB hub.
Thought it might be an idea to purchase a snap-in for the phone cradle and use an iPhone (I have an old iPhone 4 kicking around) instead of the ipod. Anyhow, the snap-in charges the phone but there is no music streaming from the iPhone.

I've tried to dig through the various permutations of S633A, 6FL etc but got totally confused. The car does not have 6FL. Why did BMW install a phone cradle that doesn't stream music or connect directly to the handsfree system (relying only on Bluetooth even when installed in the cradle)?

Anyway - anyone know the pinot for the cradle so I can hack it into the built-in USB hub (assuming it has one fitted). I think the car was one of the last pre-LCI so may have a mishmash of modules...

Any thoughts?
