Nice one sleepyfolk

Cracking job mate , way to do it if bits are off anyway. Might have damaged the wallet now but saved in the futures.

Diff and transfer case oils are on my list too., what year is yours as understand you have to reset something on mine via the OBD port. What’s that all about my shogun never had that !

By the way no amp or connection stuff in the boot for the radio - checked this morning- spot on mate.

At the risk of becoming a PIA, as I’m only fitting the Bury car kit I will only have a mic, Bury display unit and the sOT cabling to route.

So I am being clear I am leaving the existing radio, mid and CD player in situ, just plugging in to the back of them with the wiring harnesses.

Bit confused as I am reading as if you think I’m moving the mid, but i have no need.

I think I’m clear now - just surprised ( well ex tactic actually) that I have no need to run cabling from the boot area.

Result for me in a big way as it should be relatively simples now for me, or so I think.

One happy Yorkshireman ( now that’s sumat not oft said !,,)

Cheers for that, i have no sat nav or screen just the basic business radio and single play cd.

So my model has no radio related equipment in the boot i need to worry about when looking at fitting the phone kit.

I looked at bascules post where he fitted a parrot but his car had sat nav screen and required as below:-

One BMW SOT lead – this fits ‘between’ the existing amplifier and the speaker connections, and provides the interface point for the parrot to connect to.

One 5m long loom extension cable, to run from the parrot controller back to the electronics in the boot.
I bought all my kit from justcarkits.co.uk – used them for years and they’re really helpful, but there’s plenty of other sources.

Soooooooo this means i have no need to run a cable from the boot to the front of the car as the amp and Ariel etc are located in the MID unit ?

I assume therefore the adaptor kit will simply harness up behind the existing radio /cd slot.

Given im fitting the bury or parrot kit i therefore do not need to worry about the adapter cable running from the boot amp to the radio at the front to trigger the mute function etc when a call comes in and play the call over the radio speakers, as its all in the MID unit in my model ie no sat nav/screen/ multiplay cd . ( Anyone feel free to correct me if im wrong here ).

Thanks  for the reply hope you enjoyed a trio to "gods own county", im still struggling to be fair.

The more i read i assume i must have a piece of kit in the boot that the radio must plug into !

Im figuring i will take the boot apart over the weekend and try and figure out what does what in their and how it relates back to the radio.

If anyone has any photos of what i need to look for it would be appreciated.

I understand its a piece of kit under the pump dome cover and toward the rear of the car with some sort of quadlock on it.

I need to determine if this exists with the basic radio or not, i hate giving up on stuff without a try but i may well do on this project.

To pick your brains some more and confirm my simple understanding  then......

No amp in boot so no need to run the cable ive been reading about from the boot to the parrot kit so it connects with the amp ?

Any advice really welcome.

Looking for some help with advice on fitting a phone kit, either a Parrot or Bury.

I’m no fan of elecs, in fact I loathe them, better with the spanner’s as I understand them! Please bare with the stupid questions I will then decide if I give it a go or give in and get a qualified sparks in.

I have a facelift 2005 plate with basic single CD player and basic business radio.

If this is the case do I still have the amp in the boot with the 16 pin SOT lead rather than 8 pin ( understand these were Pre facelift), or is everything in the dash I need to wire into.

From what I can gather I thought all x5 had the amp in the boot but now I’m not sure and in fairness would not nessasairly know what I was looking for without pictures.

I looked on realoem which has helped a little but still not clear to me.

Happy ish with the trim removal aspects as I found some useful links on the site.

I want to ensure I order the correct kit and ancillary items from the supplier.

Cheers in advance for any tips, I will then decide which route I go down.

It’s still growing on me ......

Well it’s less work and more tinkering…….

Managed to get 30 minutes to swop out the fog light bulbs and go “old School” with the yellow.

I’m not convinced yet, although I have to say the night vision is actually pretty good, I would even say better compared to the normal OEM white lights even though the wattage and output are the same. Or maybe its just psychological on my part, reliving my youth in my Phase 1 Renault 5GT Turbo.

Cannot really photo the night effect but you can see a daylight shot.

Will stick with it for a while to see if it grows on me, function wise its good just not sure aesthetically now they are in.

Next job the tints now the weather is getting better

Im no expert on this but in theory a genuine should fit as the drive spindle is the same OD.

From what i can gather its not designed for the E53 as the wiper arm parks to the right not left like ours ( when viewed from behind) you can tell by the curve in the arm itself.

Cannot advise any further sorry - just what ive gleaned and figured out.

Alan seems to have had his far a while so guess its like everything else - some will work fine some may be flawed.

Not had any issues with mine thus far but not been on long enough yet.


Arm and blade came all in at £10.00 !

Personally Im not expecting OEM fit or function but i will see how it goes

Cannot say if its an exact copy or not, its plastic base and does the job i need for a £10.00.Its solid enough for a rear wiper function - as sleepyfolk says time will tell on durability.

Eh up.

its from eay BMW x5 e70 rear windscreen arm 7 wiper id 322551793046 , i double and tripled checked it fitted the E53 before i bought one.

Looks better and works better than the original, just a bit shorter on the overall wiper pattern.

I know this has been covered before but its such an easy mod and cheap ( suits a Yorkshireman !) and looks great in my opinion.

Pics below - old v new pleased with outcome for £9.90.

Tints delayed over holiday as out of time  - but they are next on list.

Well to update my thread….
Thanks to all the tips and advice I managed to get the door card off ….eventually!!
I flew through the plastic trim pop clips they came off with ease as did the interior trim pieces, I fought for a good 35 minutes with the X”!!ly clip that secures the door pull in the centre section – wow that’s a pig to shift. Eventually through wiggling and easing it came off but left the black plastic lug in situ – no problem just removed and refit on the door card.

The foam membrane was loose especially around the edge where the apparent leak was, but no rips or tears, the foam had simply come away from the black butyl putty.
I heated the putty up with a heat gun on lowest setting , I also ran Sikaflex black around the edge as a double check just in case the putty let go again and resealed.
Rebuilding was easy, just took my time.

No water ingress to date so keeping my fingers crossed

I did also check out the scuttle drains but need some help?
Where the hell are the drains, I looked on the realoem site and can see the pictures but cannot find them.
I striped out the micro filter and cleaned down the bottom, also removed the two plastic side pieces to get a better look but still could not find anything that looked like a drain ??? (see pics)

Anyone help me out with a picture of where these are,, just want to check that are clear ?
Pictures as always ( my mate was exhausted after that and needed a lay down)

Lessons I learnt:-
Pop the bottom puddle light out and disconnect first before removing door card, same for window switch
I eased the top of the door card trim off the clips using the plastic trim tool as this was easier than pulling forwards (especially as the centre clip would not shift)
I placed a stool with towel under the door trim card so it did not drop suddenly when it came free
Watch out for the plastic pop clips they do break no matter how careful you are and buy spares ( thanks sleepyfolk)
Watch out for the illuminated door connection, I bust mine in the fight with the centre clip, despite having the door card supported. This was fixed using 2 part clear epoxy resin , carefully building it up so it bonded and supported the joint. Worked a treat.
If its cold and you use Sikaflex put it where its warm in the house ( boiler room etc) it flows far better and the grab strength improved.
