General X5 Forum (F15) / Which brake discs and pads?
« on: February 27, 2017, 05:25:02 PM »
Just had a quote from BMW for new discs (front) at £120 + VAT per side.  (£600 in total for new discs and pads is making my eyes water!)

This is part number 34116868939 for 2013 x5 3.0d M Sport.

Does anyone know who makes the OEM discs and pads for BMW?

I can get Pagid, Bosch, Zimmerman, Brembo, and a whole bunch I've never heard of, for considerably less online. I'm in half a mind to go for Pagid - although you'd expect Bosch to be good and they are a fair bit cheaper.

Does anyone have any experience to share?

General X5 Forum (F15) / AdBlue - are all brands the same stuff?
« on: June 11, 2014, 11:24:02 PM »
Hi Folks

I am about to buy some AdBlue to top up my 3.0d X-drive. There are a number of different makes. Some seem to be better value than others.  The BMW product much more expensive.

Does anyone know if there is any difference whether you use any particular make?

So, what is everyone else getting to the gallon?  I've only done 650 miles, but haven't managed to better 34 mpg, with total average of 32 mpg.

My old E53 was meant to do 29.1 average mpg.  And even after 110k miles on the clock it was still giving me a regular average 29 mpg.

Has anyone managed to do better than 34mpg?  If so is there anything I'm doing wrong?

General X5 Forum (F15) / Hello there!
« on: March 28, 2014, 07:20:48 PM »

I'm moving over here from the E53 forum.

I was about to part ex my old faithful 112k miles one owner from new E53 3.0d sport for an E70.  Got so pee'd off with being messed around by the dealer, we looked elsewhere and will become the proud owners of a space grey xdrive 3.0d Msport F15.

I'll post a picture when we pick it up  :) :) :)

General Discussion / Does crash in history change value?
« on: March 26, 2014, 12:22:40 AM »
Been looking at a nearly new Approved Used BMW- over 2 years warranty left.  Dealer has admitted that it had a shunt, causing some medium damage to front and rear.  I've seen some photos of the damage - it is obvious, but the car was still easily driveable.   I doubt it let the airbags off. The damage has been professionally repaired by BMW.  I've had a good look and can't see any sign of the damage or the repair.  It had a new bumper, the odd light fitting, new Kidney grille etc.  Looks good as new.

Would the crash history put you off buying the car?  If so, why?

General X5 Forum (E70) / Are E53 and E70 wheels interchangeable?
« on: March 19, 2014, 08:18:39 PM »
I have a spare set of 17"wheels which I used for all weather tyres on the e53.  Before I sell them, they don't by any chance fit on the E70 do they?

Hi Folks

I am just in the process of moving from the E53 forum to the E70 forum!  I have traded my old E53 for a nearly new E70 :)

We have two big dogs, who like to shed hair and mud wherever they go!

We want to get a cover that is sturdy and not too slippery (is so the dogs don't skid around in the boot).  I have seen the BMW part on BMW Direct's ebay store

It looks a little tacky in the small picture and I can't find any product details.

There is a reasonable looking product at UK custom covers:

that is half the price of the BMW one.

There's also the
Hatchbag product

And for really smart pricey jobs, there's OTT - by far the most expensive

Does any one have any experience of these?

Also do people fit the OEM BMW dog guard

or are there better ones on the market, such as the Barjo for a similar price:

I am looking forward to getting to know you all over here on E70!
All the best

Buy and sell / 4 x 17" Alloys with Michelin M+S all weather tyres
« on: March 14, 2014, 09:02:22 PM »
Hi all,

I am part-xing my E53 (for an E70), so have for sale 4 nearly new alloys  17x7.5" ET40 part number: BMW 36111096159 .  I'd keep them if they fitted the E70 but they don't :(

They are unmarked, shod with Michelin All Weather M+S (mud and snow) MXV4 Plus.  The tyres all have 7mm tread.

These were all as new (mainly ex-spares) when I fitted them in January 2014.  I wanted to be prepared this year for the snow - but it didn't arrive. I have to say, they are really nice to drive with as they make the ride smoother than the 18" snowflakes on the Sport.

I will be taking them off the car in the next few days and then will be able to post some pictures.

I'm after £400 ono  - collection from Warwick or carriage at cost.

Any questions send me a pm.

General X5 Forum (E53) / Bye bye E53ers! Thanks for all your help.
« on: March 14, 2014, 08:32:58 PM »
As some of you may have noticed from my gearbox thread, I have decided to part-ex our old faithful E53 against an E70.  I will put the snowflake wheels back on and sell the new standard alloys I put on for the non-existent snow!

As we have owned this car from new, I can say that the E53 has been the most reliable and most enjoyable car either me or my partner have ever owned - 70 years driving between the two of us!

The choice of another X5 was very easy.  I may not be posting queries for a few years yet, but I know that the members of this forum make it much more fun to own an X5 when they start to grow old.

A massive thank you to all of you who have helped me over the last few months.  Enjoy your cars and drive safe.

Problems / Gearbox problems - complete loss of drive
« on: March 11, 2014, 11:09:21 PM »
Hi Folks

After 112k of faithful service my E53 3.0D Sport had to be come home on the back of a tow truck this evening.

SWIMBO told me that the Auto Trans Fail Safe warning came up.  We had noticed the engine sort of catching at around 40mph, but otherwise appeared to be rock solid.

I took the car down to my Indie BMW garage this afternoon.  They put it on the computer and identified problems in the gearbox.  He said maybe try a gearbox oil service, but if that doesn't help you will need to see his recommended gear box specialist.  So I drove 1 mile to centre of Warwick for a coffee.  By the time I got there the engine had started over revving.

When I got back to the car, the gearbox would hardly engage, but gradually pulled away - revving very high.  I got a couple of miles on the way home and it got worse and worse and eventually all drive was lost.

So I have no drive whatsoever in all forward and reverse gears.  The engine revs as if it is in neutral.

From reading other posts, I'm wondering if the torque converter has gone and maybe some other nasty stuff as well.  I'm bracing myself for a big bill - I'll need the car to be towed to the garage for a start off.

What do you think?

General X5 Forum (E53) / slight wheel wobble braking at 70mph
« on: February 05, 2014, 07:59:26 PM »
Hi Folks

My 2003 3.0d Sport has developed a slight wobble /shudder when you apply steady brake pressure in the window between around 75 to 65 mph.  I'm talking about steady progressive braking.

I have recently swapped the wheels over, (to 5 spoke 17" wheels with M+S tyres) and wonder whether they need re-balancing?  Or is it the brakes?

Any ideas?:help2:

I find this really annoying in a car that has only done 110,000 miles :))

Hi Folks,

Before I make a mistake, I thought I would ask here.  I have bought some extra 'spare wheels' which I want to swap with the standard wheels on my 3.0d Sport.

Part 1

So I have a set of 4 x 17" wheels (including my existing spare) all with Michelin MVX4 plus M+S (all weather) tyres.

Just want to check there is no good reason not to run the car on these wheels and tyres.  As far as I recall they were the standard on the 2003 3.0d SE.  My query relates to use with Sport suspension.

I will not be thrashing the car and am hoping to get better winter use from these than the standard.  Also a couple of my tyres on the snowflake 19" wheels need replacing and they cost an arm and a leg.

Part 2

I am wondering whether to get a fifth spare wheel or whether to get an emergency tyre repair kit instead.  Any views on this?

Happy New Year

Problems / Changed Brake Discs & Pads - Light stays on
« on: August 22, 2013, 10:45:48 AM »
Hi Folks

Anyone know why my "Check brake linings" warning is still coming up after I've changed my worn rear brake discs and pads and replaced the wear sensor?

And is there anything I can do about it?

General X5 Forum (E53) / Rear brake wear sensors

Hi folks

I am just wondering how many brake wear sensors I will need when I change my rear pads - are there one or two needed?
