After replacing  the rear disc brake shoes on the X5, I am struggling to replace the springs.

I somehow  (by luck) managed on pass side but driver side is proving difficult,  so gave up after 30 min not wanting to shred my hands in the process.

Whats the best way to get or stretch the springs into place. Is there a recommended tool to do this?

Just thought to give an update on this in case anyone else is in a similar situation.

I took the airbag off the steering wheel and gave the other plugs a  good shake to make sure they are properly seated, also blew away what little dust I could find.

Connected everything together feeling that I have achieved nothing. pressed the horn and it works!

One of the MOT failures on my E53 3.0d was perishing steering wheel gator on Front Pass side.

So I had a look at it and could see some oil on the floor of my driveway and can also the oily gator.


I thought the gator contains grease not oil? If it is grease wont just be around the gator and metal arms rather that  spots of oil on the floor?

I booked the car in for the MOT place (which is not a bmw independent) to change the gator .... at a cost of £100 they say.

Just wondering there if issue could be more than that which may need entrusting to a proper bmw garage?

Hi all,

Pressing my horn does not work on E53 3.0d and  Car is due back this friday  for MOT retest

Here are the fault testing that I have done so far.

1) The 2 horns work when powered from to the battery
2) While my daughter pressed the horn I connected a circuit tester in the bonnet to the wires going to the horn but tester does not light up
3) I checked the fuse box in the glove box to confirm presence of 12v supply. Also tested the 2 top ends of the 15A fuse  and can confirm 12v presence
4) Took the glove box out to get to the back of the fuse box where the horn & fuel pump relays are situated. swapped the fuel pump relay with the horn relay and the horn still does not sound at all.

So this leaves me with the steering wheel as the only place left to check. Are there any precautions that i need to take since this is where the airbag is situated? Not sure what exactly I will be testing here....

Any links to wiring diagrams for the horns circuit to see how it links together?

Indeed, I might have to cut the shortest distance.

Dropped the car in for MOT this morning and it failed only on the horn and steering gaiter.

looks like I have some more work to do on the brake shoes then get a proper mechanic to sort the gaiter out.

Yesterday was a nightmare.

After bashing the disc a few times to get it off unsuccessfully, I then went back to the handbrake and released the retaining nuts,then turned the cog which in turn allowed me to get the disc off.

The bashing on (driver side) must have resulted in a bit of damage either to (i) one of the retaining spring loaded  screw or (ii) the rear disc backplate / flange.

After assembly I can hear a rattle of the lower shoe against the backplate which means the retaining spring has come loose :(

It's really a shame that most of the brake parts at BMW that used to be off the shelf items are now order only also requiring upfront payment.

I wished I has checked but is the disc back plate easy fit or the whole hub has to be removed 1st?  ... which was the case for my Golf Mkiv
OR maybe have the hole welded a little to make it smaller.

ok guys , I ran into trouble.

The left disc came off  easily with  brake shoe lining  falling off with one wack of a rubber mallet.

The right disc just won't come off. It is free from the backing plate but the brake shoes is still gripping it from behind. I released the hand brake and still no joy. It just keeps wobbling about

Please what is the best way to get it off?

that's true.  Now sdded to the list.

I hate doing the shoes, too fiddly

I am only doing the rear discs and pads at the moment for the MOT . Also so that then bed in a bit before doing the fronts.

Ragid rear Discs  pads are £86  from ECP compared to £156 from Dealer

Brembos rear Discs  pads is £162 from GSF

Prices are similar for both

Hi all, I am about to change the pads and discs on the E53 sports D.

Should I be buying the stock items from the dealer or OEM ones from ECP are just as good? . If ECP which brand?

So looks like narrowing down to an X5 or 2 Series. Just wondering if I should go for diesel or petrol
