General X5 Forum (E70) / Non Run Flat but * rated
« on: April 16, 2018, 11:47:28 AM »
All,

Looking to fit new rear tyres, but can't find a decent option for 285 /45 19 * rated, but non run flat. Need the higher load rating since it's a 7 seater.

Will replace the fronts too if I go non run flat.

Any suggestions?

General Discussion / Anyone driven a 2018 X3 yet?
« on: December 30, 2017, 08:42:07 AM »
I popped into my local BMW dealer yesterday to collect a part, but was drawn to the new X3 in the showroom. Looks a fantastic size and that interior is stunning. Whilst the old X3 interior was very much on a par with the 3 series range (not a good thing), this looks a step up even from my old F11. Size wise it looks bang on too, cabin size much like my old E53, you just don't sit quite as high.

Just need to depreciation to do it's thing, that 30d was £53k with options, yikes! 40i could be an interesting option.

So just wondering if anyone has driven one yet and what your thoughts are.. Still hard to overlook the F15 as a replacement for my E70.  But I guess that's the old vs new discussions...

General X5 Forum (E70) / 7 Seater E70 SE Disc Size?
« on: November 20, 2017, 07:35:50 PM »
Evening,

My 2011 3.0d SE is due new brake discs, there's quite a lip on them now.

Now I could be making this up, but did I read somewhere the 7 seater has the larger M Sport discs or was it the 40d brakes?? So 348mm or 349mm rather than 332mm? I can't find any reference to this online though :(

Going to go for Pagid discs and Textar pads at ECP, that combination has always served me well on other cars, with the bonus they're on offer at the moment with their Black Friday deal.

Buy and sell / Set of front and rear OEM E70 X5 Mud Flaps
« on: January 12, 2017, 12:01:45 PM »
All,

I've fitted extended arches to my E70 X5 and realised my mud flaps are specific to the non extended arches :(

Not sure exactly what they're worth used, but I have the original BMW invoice which was around £170 if I recall correctly, so looking for £60 posted.

You will need to buy the plastic rivets and screws for fitting.

Will upload pictures, otherwise PM me.

General X3 Forum (E83) / 2.0d X3 Turbo Replacement Advice
« on: January 07, 2017, 09:33:35 PM »
Evening all,

Wasn't ever expecting to be posting here asking about my wives car :( But today it lost power (wouldn't rev above 2000rpm and whirling\whining noise from the engine bay. I met her, suspected a turbo failure, AA collected car and recovered to my BMW indy garage. He confirmed it's the turbo. Car is a 2008 with 74k miles.

My mechanic recommended the more expensive turbo at Eurocarparts (two available), he's replaced dozens and never had any problems, they come with a two year warranty. I believe it's made by the, same manufacturer as BMW use. It's brand new, not a reconditioned unit. However, it's a few quid over £1k plus fitting!

Has anyone had any success with the recon units on ebay or elsewhere? Seem to be around around £300?? Plus a £150 refundable deposit.

Car is a keeper for the next 18 months and 20k miles, so would rather fix for long term reliability, but if possible to save £700 then that's obviously worth considering.

Look forward to your thoughts.

At lunchtime today, I was diverted onto a small road and some "mummy" was obviously in a rush and couldn't stay on her side of the road and smacked into my mirror. The mirror cover came off, but has clipped back on with a few minor scratches. The glass also fell off, but again has popped back in, but is smashed at the right hand side.

I've spoken to BMW and they want £300+ for the glass alone!!
"auto dipping exterior mirrors so the mirror glass will cost £308.56 inc VAT and P&P. "

Ideally I'd like to to keep the auto dimming function, but if it saves a small fortune then I don't really care.

Has anyone successfully replaced the glass from a supplier other than BMW?

Lots of second hand ones on ebay, but how do I know they have auto dimming?

Easy enough to replace? Certainly clipped back on easily, but not sure how the heated element etc connects. Plug and play?

Could do without a £300 bill at this time of year.

Evening guys,

So I bought a brand new set of H&R black 35mm and 25mm DRA for my winter wheels, but 25mm is just a bit much for the fronts, perfect for the rears though. Part number B50757404

Before I put them up for sale, anyone fancy swapping 12mm or 15mm hubcentric spacers, ideally black and must be Eibach or H&R and of course 74.1 centre bore, E53 or normal BMW spacers no use.

Drop me a PM.

Superchips Bluefin remap device. Reset by Superchip (letter to prove) only 6 months old. Will sell for £255 posted.

Genuine BMW 132 style wheels for E53 X5. I bought these off a local lad, with the intention of removing the tyres and fitting winter tyres (and sell the tyres). They were freshly powder coated for a durable finish. Acceltra tyres still have the labels on them, only done a few miles round the block. Tyres sizes are standard E46/90 3 series size, 255/30/19 and 225/35/19.  Fronts are 9x19 ET48 and Rears 10x19 and ET45

Few small minor marks from storage and transportation, but just very very picky. Includes carbon look centre caps. £500

Evening all,

I've tried cleaning my running boards by removing the plastic grommets and machine polishing using abrasive pads and metal polish, but they still don't meet my OCD standards, but much better! :)

My question is, if i order new ones, how do I remove the old ones and fit them? Are they bonded on, just prise them off?

General X5 Forum (E70) / 20" Non RFT vs 19" RFT Experiences?
« on: June 14, 2016, 02:34:56 PM »
I’m collecting my E70 LCI tomorrow, although I won’t be running it until I sell my E53. However, even during the test drive, the ride was quite a bit firmer than I’m used to. Both 19” tyres, same profile and size and both "sport" suspension, but obviously run flat tyres on the E70.

Whilst the 19’s work on the E53 perfectly, I do think 20's look good on the E70. However I’m very hesitant to move to 20’s since I can only assume from a drive in my mates E70 that the ride will get even worse with the lower profile and wider tyres and generally more fidgety on the road.

However, my question is, are 20" Non RFT's comparable or better than 19" with RFT's? If not, I'll stick with 19's. I always remove RFT from my Beemers, dreadful things!

Would love to hear your experience.

2005 X5 3.0d Sport automatic with full service history, all BMW dealership except one. Sterling Grey. Mileage is now just 62900 miles (will increase). The list of options (see below) is very comprehensive, with some very rare options such as double glazing. I’m just the 3rd owner. This particular example is immaculate (I don’t use that term loosely) both inside and outside.

Previous owner of 9 years changed the oil between services using Mobil 1 oil.  Four green lights remaining on dash, not due again until Jan 2018. MOT’d until 9th Feb 2017, no advisories at the last MOT.

Wheels are immaculate, minus a few minor marks on the N/S rear, see photograph. All four tyres are just 6 months old, approx. 7mm tread depth all round.

Regarding any sunroof concerns, I’ve had the rear glass panel disabled from tilting as this is a common issue. However this does not affect the front glass tilting, nor the sunroof fully retracting or the sun blind.

During my ownership, to ensure this car is perfect, I’ve recently had the steering wheel re-trimmed in Nappa leather by Royal Steering Wheels and took the opportunity to replace the plastic steering wheel trim as it was scuffed. Professional privacy glass (windows tints) added for the kids. I also installed aluminium speedo cluster rings to modernise the dash a little.

This car will be appreciated by any BMW enthusiast with the advantage of falling into the cheaper road tax bracket and also being virtually depreciation free.

Car is located close to Aberdeen, but with budget flights available from most UK airports, don’t let that put you off. I traveled to Birmingham for this one, well worth it.

Priced at £10,995. Reduced to £10,400. Serious inquiries only.

(Excuse the poor picture in the sun, will update at the weekend)

General X5 Forum (E53) / E53 X5 Roof Bars
« on: May 23, 2016, 09:53:24 PM »
Evening all,

I'm thinking of fitting BMW OEM roof bars to carry a few bikes on holiday. On past cars I've used tow bars, so have a couple of questions:

Since I have the panoramic sunroof, do the rails whistle when no bike rack is fitted? Ideally I'd like to leave them on all the time and just slide the bike racks in when required.

If not, how quickly can the rail be removed\fitted?

General X5 Forum (E53) / E46 Steering Wheel Question - E53
« on: March 01, 2016, 07:48:31 PM »
Evening all,

Had my E53 3.0d for 4 days now, really enjoying it despite coming from a 2011 F11 M Sport.

One bug bear though is the sheer size of the steering wheel, makes things awkward around town and parking.

Been reading up quite a bit on this, but all of the threads online are about fitting a E46 wheel with SMG paddles. If I was just to go with a standard E46 wheel, no paddles, do I still need a new slip ring, or is it a direct swap?
