General X5 Forum (E70) / Comfort access stopped working
« on: December 14, 2017, 09:35:33 PM »
This is more for for others information really, as I’ve fixed the problem:

A few weeks ago my comfort access stopped working completely - wouldn’t unlock from any handle and wouldn’t start without the key in the slot. Unlocked using the fob button fine though. There were no faults logged and no messages on the screen. When I pressed the start button it would just flash up the ‘key not present’ icon. I changed the fob battery (although I’d have expected low battery messages if this was the issue) but it didn’t help.

Reading around various forums, I saw a few people posting to say that this can be caused by a dying main battery. Prior to the comfort access failing I had occasionally had the increased battery discharge message come up, so I was leaning towards this being the problem. Checking the existing battery, I saw it was a BMW branded one with a 2007 manufacture date so it was 10 years old and almost certainly the original factory item.

Anyway, I changed the battery and sure enough, comfort access is working again. I have no idea why a failing battery causes this one strange symptom. Some people have speculated that the car disables the CA to reduce load on the battery (presumably having the antennas powered all the time draws a lot of power). Kind of makes sense, although you’d think the car would let you know it was doing it.

Hopefully this will help anyone with a similar problem.

General X5 Forum (E70) / Dash Cam power sources
« on: September 18, 2017, 05:00:41 PM »
Ok, I'm going to be hard-wiring a dash cam soon and need very specific power sources - Firstly I need a genuine switched acc supply (i.e. one that switches off with the ignition, not one that goes to sleep a number of minutes later) and secondly I need either a permanent live or a 'sleep timer' switched supply. I think for the second one a 'sleep timer' supply would actually be best as this won't throw any battery drain errors and it'll work fine for what I need.

My dash cam has a power supply box that uses the switched feed to trigger a 10 second timer which allows a graceful shutdown - hence why I need a genuine acc switched input and any other input which will supply power for >10s after ignition off.

Ideally I'd like the feeds up the front, but not in the roof, as the DVR for the camera is going to be mounted somewhere around the dash/glovebox/centre console area. That being said, I'm happy to run wires from anywhere in the car if needed.

So, anyone have any ideas? A couple of questions spring to mind:

1. Are the cig lighters acc switched or on a sleep timer?
2. Is the phone snap-in switched, on a sleep timer or permanent (I've removed mine so the wiring is easy to tap into)?
