E53 D Sport Timing cover Hydraulic Tensioner swap out.

I have a major rattle that occurs at about 3,500 rpm only regardless of engine load, seams to be from timing cover.

Came on over a 2 month period of 40 miles a day.
I have gone thru the engine with a stethoscope & its defo from timing cover area.
SO
before I order bits & pull it all to bits....

I spotted that the TOP 1/3rd of the timing cover is removable on its own, and want to know if the hydraulic tensioner can be removed from under this cover on its own... as I don't want to have to pull the whole front end off the car if I can possibly help it...

It may possibly be that the chain guides are worn out or maybe the hydraulic tensioner has gradually failed, but the tensioner change is the easiest bit to start with either way.

Any one got a good manual, or done this, or can look up the info, or have a pictorial ?

Much appreciated.

Hi again Sir,
The road was smooth, no pot holes to wobble connections, & the stop & re-start was on smooth ground too.

Two things to note.... the air temp was 32 degrees, & i noticed a vibration from the center of the car after we re-started & were on our way again.

Just prior to the issue, I was commenting to my other-half how smooth the drive was....
I spoke toooooo soon I guess.

3 hours earlier, the D-Sport did get a wizzy run on the motor way, but it was cooler then.

The gearbox was supposed to have been overhauled by the previous owner 10 months ago... and is potentially still under warranty..

Driving earlier today...

Car refused to go beyond 4th gear, regardless of throttling.

Then lost drive altogether

I put into neutral for 5 secs whilst coasting, & back into drive.

Transmission Fail-Safe came up & car locked into 3rd or 4th gear by the feel of it.

Stopped on hard shoulder, switched off for 2 mins & restarted, and drove another 20 miles fault free as if nothing had happened.

It's not done stuff like this before, so I'm curious of what it could be ?

Battery is new, lots of volts 13.8 > 14.1 generally.

any ideas of why this happened ?

Many thanks Richard.

With the undertray missing, the inner wheel arches & other trim parts will flap about, & potentially catch a tyre & get torn off & flung into the following vehicle.
The undertray secures & locates lots of other bits of under side plastic splash covers & trim.

I lost several of the small inner arch trim parts & arch vents this way last year when I couldn't be arsed to refit the undertray after a day working under the X5, then drove 50 miles. When I arrived at my destination, the inner arch was hanging off & so nearly lost.

I bought one of these a year ago - £120.

It is nasty, it vibrates & rattles, feels cheap & tacky, and looks like some sort of sex toy for perverts.
Worst £120 I ever spent.

I opened it up after I refitted the original X5 Gear Knob, & in all honesty it is actually worth £20 at best in my opinion.

I have done the EGR delete to both my X5's.
It does allow the engine to breath easier - if combined with a K&N lifetime air filter, & makes a small difference in power & economy, but does add a bit more torque at low revs.
Typically, the EGR valve releases already burned exhaust gasses into the induction/inlet manifold.

A few things happen here:
The whole concept of a turbo INTER-COOLER is to chill the incoming air to the engine.....
The EGR valve pipes super-heated burned exhaust into the engine, which make no bloody sense at all re having an inter-cooler.
The EGR pipes burned exhaust into the intake, thus lowering the combustibility of the induction air - also make no bloody sense.

The concept of the EGR is to reduce emissions a fraction so the exhaust has a tinsy bit less % of nasties, buy fails to compensate for the loss of power it creates, thus the Go-Go pedal being used harder to compensate.

GET RID of the EGR valve, get a straight thru unit, blank off the exhaust end of the EGR feed, plug the vacuum pipe controlling the EGR valve.... and you're ready to go.

As a point of interest, my mate owns an MOT station, & we tested my latest X5 with & without the EGR valve fitted... There was no notable difference in emissions at all.

The two single most best things to do for emissions reduction before an MOT, is an oil & filter change & a cleaned/new air filter, + a dose of injector cleaner the week before.

I have a 190k car, with a clean emission status.

Hi Raj,
I have one of these, but never got round to installing it...
I will dig it out this weekend n& give it a go.

Will this package also pinpoint a potential auto leveling issue cause if a potentiometer height sensor is iffy?.

I can tell you, that this damned E53 AC system is a ball-ache of ball-aches to problem solve.

The X5 im selling now, the front fan behind the kidney grilles never worked. the modules were swapped out into other x5's & worked, the dash display the same, the fan powered up from another X5 via jumper connector leads....
But would it turn on command from my car ??  Bollox no way...

X5 AC systems are like stroppy-spoiled-children - annoying at best..

Saying that, I must admit that I have managed to solve lots of other X5 niggles easily - except the AC

I just acquired another X5 tonight.... and its throwing up the self leveling warning too.
Last weeks X5 used to do this with the old battery, but new battery sorted it.

The latest X5, sits level, pump can be heard running if I park one wheel on a kerb lol...
It has had a new battery 3 months ago & is a rapid spin up starter too....

So,I'm wondering why this car is throwing up errors. I give it time to cycle its diagnostics before starting...
I'm at a loss here also.

Any more ideas, maybe help me & this other chap too please ?
