Hello Guys. So I said I would keep at it until problem solved, well its solved. Spent £80 on a new battery, £55 on OBD lead and software, an Ebay purchase of £268 for same ECU, EWS, 2 keys and locks all as a package.
Tell tale sign (not noticed by me but by my very clever friend who owns Autocare in Blackburn, Lancashire, UK) was my airbag light much dimmer than the rest of the dashboard Xmas tree ! Radio didnt work, courtesy lights in sun visors didnt work either, odd messages on dashboard etc etc. So what was it finally ??? The ignition switch !! One dodgy contact caused all the grief. Simple test..... remove upper and lower screws from steering column plastic shroud, insert key, wiggle wires hard(ish) on the switch block whilst turning key to crank position and that may be enough to allow a wiping of the dodgy contacts, worked for me. £19.95p spent now on Ebay for a new switch back and 1 hour of unscrewing and re-screwing :-) A BIG thanks to Matt from Autocare and I am back on the road again.

General X5 Forum (E53) / Dashboard errors etc

Hello Forum.  This has probably been asked before so I am hoping to find an answer please. I have an auto X5 E53, 2006. Slowly pulling into a car park after the motorway the airbag light lit dimly then slowly faded away, followed swiftly by 'Trans.Failsafe Prog'. I stopped the car, ignition off, tried re-starting, dash lights all ok but turning key the starter would not turn, no fading of lights etc on dash but several attempts proved futile. Eventually after moving gear selector and handbrake a few times and pressing brake a few times the engine started as normal ! This non-starting has happened a few times now over 3 days but only when parked after a run, starts fine from cold. The 'Trans.Failsafe.Prog' has not reappeared but the airbag light stays on now. Also yesterday the cruise would not engage, symbol appears on dash but thats all. Did a restart and cruise works again... most odd. Todays issue is airbag light still on and now 'Seatbelt Warning' with my seatbelt on and just myself in the car. Any ideas before I call an exorcist ? :-)
