Check the relay does strange things when it’s faulty when mine went on e61 used to do exactly same tap the relay and up it went

There’s a garage in Blackburn advertised on eBay doing a reconditioned transfer box for £850 fitted while you wait
I had a brand new one fitted by my local bmw specialist using a genuine bmw box for £3k either way it’s not cheap unless you got the facilities to do it yourself

Might not be same but I had a similar fault on my old 5 series e61 did all sorts of strange things until it packed up totally turned out to be the relay
on the e61 it’s a green relay in boot might not be same on x5 but worth checking as it was only a fiver from dealers
