looking to buy 2015 + X5

I am in the market for a 7 seater 4x4 and I came accroas a BMW x5 25d..it is a 2.0 diesel..i think looks like a 4pot with twin turbo.

I cannot really find much info on this car..does anybody know much about these engines.??

I only do about 8k a year tbh and short journeys with odd long journeys but heard the petrol X5s are heavy on mpg.

Engine series depends upon the build year. N47 series are the launch engine, replaced by the B47 series from some point in 2015. Yes it’s a 4-pot twin power turbo and that could be either two separate turbos, or a single twin-scroll turbo. N47 engines became notorious for timing chain failures in certain models, the B47 is better.

Short journeys with modern diesels can cause the particulate filter (DPF) to clog up. You’ll need to do longer journeys every 300-400 miles to get the exhaust hot enough to burn the soot off. That means a run of at least 20 mins above 40mph once the engine has fully warmed up.

I bought a 2016 66 plate 40d M sport last year , I would try a few different engine models first as they differ quite a lot performance wise but fuel consumption is not that different . I am averaging 31.3 mpg which is good for the 313bhp that it pumps out , they also do a 40e which is part electric and a 2.0 litre engine combination that gives you about 20 miles on electric , but has the peace of mind of the engine as a back up .
I would advise to buy a main dealer car as they have a 12 months warranty that can be extended and have had a used car check , 12 months mot , My car also came with the remainder of a 5 year service pack . Idea of costs they had done about £1800 of remedial work to the car with 26000 miles and one owner , £1200 to do a full service . They aren`t cheap to fix or service but the ride is very good , tyres are roughly 1k a set for 20" , 8-900 for 19" , so check tyres are all the same brand and are star rated , this will give you an idea if the car has been skimped on or been treat properly , they can have problems with diffs if the wrong tyres have been used which is expensive to fix .

Thanks for the replies.. I will be looking out for a b47 engine then if we do decide to go for one..

I would have preferred the 3.0 petrol but seems like can only find one on a much newer reg like 2019 + and they are out of our budget..not sure if they ever made them between the 2015-2017 years..i know the old x5s had a 3.0 petrol

Yup i will be buying from dealers so i get that 12 months warranty as a piece of mind. I have had some horror stories with my bmws in the past..namely my e90 330i when the injectors failed after 3 months of buying it. was dreadful.

also reason was looking at the 25d was the low tax and insurance.

20 Miles of electric hardly worth it or is it suppose to be 200 miles

Nope. 20 miles. It’s why hybrids make no sense because then you have to lug the weight of the battery around, and in many cases the engine does not charge it. The Government used to give a tax break to companies buying hybrids until they finally understood that many of them still had their charging leads completely unused in the boot. Who would have thought that would happen!
