Brand new tyres 8mm.........?

Post by StuBeeDoo » Wed Aug 12, 2020 7:54 pm

Yet again, I have cause to doubt (I would like to say "refute", but as a layman I'm loathe to appear big-headed) this oft-bandied claim. Out of curiosity I measured my new Michelin CrossClimate+ today. 6.8mm one side, 7.0mm in the centre, 6.9mm the other side.

IIRC, when my Avons were new they had similar tread depths - certainly no more than 7.0mm.

Just thought I'd share.

I had for a long-time believed all new regular tyres started with 8mm. That was until recently when i thought my Continentals were wearing too quickly. I forget now what the suppliers said but they confirmed they don't start life with 8mm of tread.

That's ^^^ the thread I was thinking of! I knew I'd posted about this somewhere before. :)

What size and brand?

The Vredestein winters I had, now on the Touareg were 9mm but I think winter specs are always deeper?

Zeta 275.40.20, 315.35.20 they are a cheap M&S marked tyre but not a proper winter tyre.

Think it does depend upon makes but I have always worked on the basis of 7mm for new tyres tbh. That's summer/all year ones as winters generally have a touch more.

Hi Richard,

yes it has been sometime. Just crazy busy with work and modding the GTI  .
I do keep an eye on the threads but usually they're answered before I get a chance so don't comment LOL.

Also I may have just bought another 4.8is  Love them that much lol

How are doing?

Glad to hear (and apples for the minor hijack folks). Been WFH for 6 months now due to the virus (not caught it) but very busy. Still got the three BMWs and spend time trying to answer people’s queries if I can. I think our project car will be the E46 now it’s 15 years old. Would love a 4.8is but it wouldn’t get enough use. :( Other than that it’s same ol, same ol. :D [/hijack off]

Yeah been wfh since the lockdown in March. Absolutely loving it as save a fortune on fuel and tyres (just to keep it on track of the thread lol - sorry guys).

Nice on the E46, do have a soft spot for them.
My 4.8’s at 177k now and needs a little money spent but decided to buy a low mileage mint example instead and swap my bits over. Just can’t part with a 4.8 so need to keep one in my life.
