Transmission Fault and jumped out of gear on motorway

Fri Jul 31, 2020 10:39 pm

In the spade of 1 month I've had this fault come up, transmission fault. Both time it has happened whilst I was accelerating. Any ideas what this could be? The car is a 2009 35d 6 speed

Mine did the exact same thing and it got to the point where it wouldn't even move without jumping out of gear. I was quoted about £2000 to fix it but eventually got a new gearbox fitted at bmw under warranty/ good will (long story).

I was reading on another board that it could be solenoids? It does sound similar to what you have had.... I've got a feeling it'd going to be a big bit on pocket

Id check the oil level first as I think I remember a similar issue on here being low oil :D

bmw said mine was low oil and charged me for a top up as fluid isn't covered under warranty but it still kept doing it.

Could have been yours I was thinking of ,worth a try anyway as all other options will be very expensive. :)

Ouch :o not cheap and 2700 is probably near what a transmission specialist would charge as bmw prices are just silly but its guaranteed now for a while .What sort of miles were on it when it happened ?

It's looking like one of the clutchs? If that's what you call it.
I'm expecting an expensive hit. The car has 177k miles. Is this normal have I done well to reach that mileage or do thry usually last longer

The ZF 6-speed box in its first iteration (you have Mark 2) was a reliability horror story. Mine (a Mark 1) went at less than 40k miles! That cost £2500 back in 2008 with BMW quoting £7k as they only replace not repair. I had it rebuilt locally. The Mark 2 is generally pretty good.

In my case they needed to fit a major overhaul kit, oil pump and torque converter. It later had a Mechatronics module - though there was no fault it was the rebuild that wasn’t quite right.

177k for an auto box is a fair mileage for it to give up at. My rebuild with OEM parts was about £800 in parts and 17-20 hours of labour (the expensive bit).

You can get rebuilt boxes with 12 month warranty for around the £2k or just below mark. BMW will only replace at silly money.

So the earlier ones were very poor to fail that quick. Do you still have the same car? I think the previous owner didn't change the oil, I got it changed last year at 165k but probably too late. Once it's been rebuilt are they back to being good as new or will they prematurely fail again?

No, I sold it in 2011. Did almost another 20k miles with no issues. Early (Mk1) 6-sp boxes failed in large numbers, and not just on BMWs. I think a Class Action was won against BMW in the US, no such luck in the EU. If rebuilt properly then they should be fine. The only issue with mine was the casing had been damaged by the swarf and the changeover sequence on two of the clutches wasn’t right. The repairer at Biggleswade took the car back, completely replaced the box under their warranty and that was it sorted. Their warranty also came with a 1,000 mile check and oil change.

In my case I had damage to 1 brake and 2 clutch packs after part of the Sprag Clutch in the TC failed jamming the oil pump. The loss of hydraulic pressure did the damage. The OEM ZF major overhaul kit included all new clutch & brake pack sets, and they put a new TC in along with a replacement for the wrecked oil pump. They would have done the individual servos too but as I had warranty cover, they replaced the Mechatronics completely. At that time they had about 90 BMWs in their car park - all 5/6 sp with box failure. When I had the E46 manual box done in 2018 it was full of VAG cars with DSG box failures and just a couple of M3s with SMG box faults.
