Sluggish e70 3.0sd

Post by ChoongJang » Sat Feb 05, 2011 10:01 pm

My 2008 x5 3.0sd seems very sluggish when pulling away or at low speed, it seems to make the noise when i accelerate but dont move very quick, especially up a slight hill it feels like it is struggling. I have alse noticrd the mpg when doing slow start stop under 30mph is around 16mpg.

Someone mentioned that one of the turbos may not be working properly, how would i tell? It is booked in at dealer but bot for few weeks

Thanks

As the car is still under warranty and as you say possible a turbo issue, I would push for the dealer to make space to at least look at the car as a matter of urgency.

Two hopes for the dealer the X's was purchased from, albeit I do agree :headbang:

@Choong - Have you given the 'X' the beans? lots of local stop/start trips aren't great for this type of car. A full trottle run along the local 27 would be worth a shot. I'd be more than happy to give it a go if it helps :D . As said, it's all under warranty so if there is an issue you'll be covered.

I drove to southampton today on M27, the mpg needle was on 30 just under, but as soon as i came off motorway, mpg was right down with needle all the way to one side, and pulling away from lights, roundabouts etc, it seemed like i was towing a lorry!

i will try to push dealer to look earlier but only slot they had with courtesy car is 23rd Feb

thanks

r u sure its the 3.0sd with 286 bhp and not just the 3.0d with 245 bhp. but still it sounds like a problem.

Sounds like it could be smaller turbo

How about calling roadside out saying you are concerned about a turbo issue then they can plug it in before dealer visit

I am hoping there is something wrong with it, so it can be fixed and give better MPG

i reset the mpg computer this morning whilst on motorway when at 70 with cruise on mpg was 32 for 5 miles, but the short journey off the motorway 1/2 mile no stopping just slowing for roundabout and into car park, average went to 19.

How much difference do wheels make with regards to MPG and pulling away?

mine has 22" Alloys, which were on the car when i bought from dealer, if this is causing significant decrease in mpg, where do i stand if i want the standard BMW wheels.

thanks

Edit : 185/35R22 i think

22's could make a big difference, but don't know if it would be as bad as you post above, I'd doubt it.

As I said before, I am surprised that the dealer sold you your 'X' with those wheels as they are not OEM. AFAIK this is not allowed and certainly wasn't when I was selling them and indeed a similar senario came up on a car that was being sold by the dealer I purchased my 'X' from a few years back. Noe things may have change but would be a good idea to ask the dealer about this. As far as your 22" wheels go, there is an issue here. The rolling circumferance more than the factory spec 20" tyres, this will affect the indicated speed and may affect the "indicated" mpg figure. i.e your car will infact dive further on the 22" than the computer thinks it has and as such will give an incorrect reading. I would also question the weight of these wheels over the std again this can impact greatly on mpg due to the extra rotational mass of each wheel. Tyre width will also affect mpg if it is more than std 185 is incorrect by the way. You will also need to find out what wheels your 'X' came with from the factory as this will have been coded into the OBC again so as to calculate things like mpg, distance left in tank & average mph.

You relly need to get this in to the dealer asap. I would infact drive there tomorrow and walk straight to Ross Perks office who is the Sales Manager and tell him in no uncertain terms that you are not happy, give him the keys and walk away suggesting he pays your hire car bill until things are sorted.

If you don't want to do this, try brimming the fuel tank, drive for say 200 miles and then re brim the tank and see hao many gallons you have used to cover said distance. This will give you the true consumption.

Thank you for the reply, i am due to drive to London on friday, involving A3 and local roads so a good test for a true MPG if i fill up before i go. I will then go to dealer Monday and get them to look at it.

If the wheels are causing the issue or at least part of it, do you think i have the right to demand the 'original' wheels be put on, i have no idea what they would have been.

Thanks again

Yes that will be a good run, but I would at least do 200+ miles on varied roads. So maybe filll up before the trip to London and then just before you go to the dealer on Monday. If the wheels are part of the issue you may be entitled to and have a good case for the correct wheels to be fitted.

As far as getting the details of the wheels that were orininally supplied on your car. I would go to another dealer and get the build spec for your car. Why not pop in to the dealer at Hindhead (Barons) to see if they can help with this on your way up the A3 ;)
