4x4 system, DSC and ABS failure! Battery Issues?

Post by mac1986 » Tue Nov 20, 2018 8:47 pm

So this has happened twice now....driving along and all of a sudden get this error message "4x4 system, DSC and ABS failure!" car still drives. I manage to pull up but cannot move the car into reverse. Turn the ignition off and car fails to start up again. First time I called the AA, all they did was jump start, all the error codes had disappeared and car drove fine. Have been driving the car for a month trouble free only for the same thing to happen today! Again, a jump start later and everything is back to normal.

I have just tested the battery using the secret menu, around 12.5V without turning over, and around 14.8V to 15V when driving around...so the alternator is doing its job! Turned on all the electrics and voltage stayed around 15V.

I recently had the blower regulator replaced, prior to this I have never had any issues so wondering if this is causing problems?

On both instances, it has been a pretty big "sudden" drop in tempreture...so was thinking it might have something to do with the battery?

Any suggestions are welcome!!

Ultimately a code read to prevent the guessing games, several options including BMW I hour diagnostics, however they may not issue the readings / fault

Several options in no particular order

1. Battery, possible though this time of year there’s many places that will check for free on the premise you buy if faulty though your not obliged..... check the year of the battery, they’re only good for circa 5 years
2. Earth lead from Battery, A known problem area & incorporates the IBS lead
3. Abs sensor, chaffed wiring or corroded/scored sensor face
4. Rust build up on ABS reluctor ring causing fault
5. Steering angle sensor
6. Transfer case, check low speed full lock to lock and listen for grunts groans knocks and bangs

I’d favour the option 1 then 2

I've heard the connector from jump start point under bonnet to alternator or starter not sure which but it did cause sudden issues like you are having.

had my mechanic look at it today and he tested the battery and it defienelty needs replacing. he has recommended buying an AGM one from BMW direct. the car isn't stop start but as per realoem it does require an AGM battery. just about to call the dealers to get a price, anywhere else I can source one?

You should be able to get one anywhere sells batteries ,it would be a good idea to match what you already have fitted and bmw will insist it needs coding which it certainly would if you switched from gel to lead/acid type as the charging voltage is different. I expect it won't be cheap I/m thinking about £300 from a dealer :o

just ringing around, dealers want £233 for the battery. online prices range from around £155 upwards...

will end up getting it from the dealer and have my mechanic fit/code it

just stumbled on this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-1-2-3-4- ... #vi-ilComp

worth a punt? have talked to sellers, they basically told me batteries are received from BMW dealers so they are legit.

according to realoem the part number for my car is 61216924023, the ebay listing part number is 61216924022. but battery spec is the same...does it matter?

Hi,
Did replacing the battery cure your problems? was anything else found wrong? I have exactly the same problem and fault messages, happened twice but 5 months apart. Just bought a jump starter and a NOCO Genius G3500 smart battery charger. Be great if you could tell me anything.

Andy
