Staggered rear wheel okay as all round spare?

Post by Alchemist » Mon Mar 25, 2019 8:27 pm

Hi all,

So one of my rear wheel's is cracked. I've since bought another (used) one and can get the original one welded to keep as a spare. It's a rear and I have the staggered 20" set up (although I want to drop to 18" all round at some point). My question is can I use the rear as a spare all round (just for when towing, as the tyres are run-flats).

Hi unfortunately you cant use a rear wheel on the front due to different tyre & wheel size 315/35/20 , 11" wheel , front 275/40/20 , 10" wheel also the offset is different if it was a square set up 255/55/18 all round that would be ok , even using the 18" spare you can buy on line with the 20" is ok due to the same circumference although they dont recommend them for towing !

Thanks Sid - that's saved me a lot of cash and effort.

To me this underlines why I need 18" of same size all round

Hi no problem !
You can go 19" also as they did the winter set as a square set up they were all et48 I think the style was 211 but will check , some people find the 18" a little bit small especially if you have a M sport with the flared arches , the tyre price difference isnt that much different either and they are more readily available as they fit Range Rovers , Vw , Porsche etc 255/50/19 compared with the 255/55/18 which is a bit of and odd size . Also watch out for a set of X6 wheels as they have a different rear pcd of 72.6 rear and 74.1 front as the E70 is 74.1 all round .
You could just get a 18 or 19"et48 as a spare !

Thanks - that's really useful and gives me a starting point to think about a square setup. Mine's a D model and I don't mind having smaller alloys if it softens the ride and means cheaper tyres. With so many pot holes and speed bumps on UK roads I'm finding the 20" a bit hard work. Would I notice the difference with smaller wheels?

So something like these (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-X5-E70-1 ... ctupt=true) which I can see have M+S tyres on.

Don't suppose you know the wheel codes for the 18" do you so I can see what they'd look like. Would it be these? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-X5-E70-E ... SwuNNb5Uef

Their PCD is 120.

Failing that your suggestion of an 18 or 19 inch spare is sensible thinking. Maybe I'll do that.

Thanks again for your wisdom - really helpful

Hi yes the first picture is style 211 although the tyres will need replacing as they should be 255/50/19 not 255/55/19 I think they may have been on a Range Rover or some Land rover with those tyre sizes as it is important to stick with factory specs so not to alter the ride height and destroy your diffs 2k a corner .
The 2nd picture is style 209 which are 18" choice , problem with these is getting the tyres , later style wheels off a F15 would be a better choice take out the RDCi valves and fit normal valves they are relatively cheap as every one wants bigger wheels !
Is your car a M sport as they run a different offset to SE models meaning the 18" wheels will look a bit lost in the arches as they are et37 rear and et40 fronts , new offsets would be et46 so 6mm difference front and 9mm rear which doesnt sound a lot but going from 20" to 18" will be a massive visual difference . Look on alloywheelsdirect.net tap in the make , model and wheel size option they show the wheels and on some the wheels on the car , alternatively type in BMW E70 wheel images on the net and put in 18" you might get a shock at how wheeny they look . 19" are the best all round for comfort and looks personnel preference had them on my X5 for 12 years with no problems .
Other styles to look out for if you have a M sport are M223 E70 9" fronts et37 , 10" rears et20
467M F15 9" fronts et37 , 10" rears et21
Se version 335 E70 9" fronts et48, 10" rears et53

Alternative X6 wheels which would require centre bores , bored out to 74.1 from 72.6 on the rears , these would give a better stance as they have a et48 front , et21 rears .
all tyres would be 255/50/19 fronts , 285/45/19 rears .

Thanks - that's really helpful. I'll take a look at how the 18" look.

Mine's an SE, so not an M Sport. What I'm after is a square set-up, so I can carry a matching spare in a size thats the most forgiving on ride quality, tyres, diffs and my wallet.

Would I notice a big difference in ride quality between a 20" staggered or square 19" (or 18") set up? I like the look of the 19" 212 style, although they cost more than the 18" used.

I'll be selling my 20" to fund them
