has the thermostat been checked? If it's stuck open the engine won't be heating up properly, this caused a drop of 3-4mpg in my E46 3.0D.

You may need software to check though if your X5 doesn't have water temp on the dashboard clocks (as i think none do)

As Alchemist said probably thermostat. My MPG had dropped off and after some Google’ing I checked the coolant temp on a run and it was low. You can check the temp in the hidden menus (Google it) if you haven’t got diagnostic kit. I changed both thermostats, not a big job, and all was good again. Mine settle at 26.4 mpg using it on a daily 13mile commute across the city.

I get 27.1mpg around town.

Definitely get the temp stats checked, if they don't get up to temp it'll affect the DPF regeneration.

Just collected my car after heater plug recall. All computers reset to 0. Five mile drive home at 3:30 pm with stop start, traffic lights, roundabouts etc. 18mpg!!!! Car normally does 28 overall and 34 on motorway run. And yes, new thermostat fitted and DPF regenerated a few months ago!
