2012 - E70 Wheel Arch Query

Post by ckl139 » Fri Aug 02, 2019 1:07 pm

Hi all,

New here (intro posted in relevant section) so apologies in advance if i'm not following any particular protocol.

I've been sent pictures of all 4 wheels on a car i'm looking at, however one of the pictures raised a question in my mind as the bolt / nuts that hold the arch seal in place seem to have rust and a black plastic piece also out of place maybe. Both items circled in red.

Could those who are in the know take a look and let me know if this is an issue, anything to worry about or normal. Unfortunately because the pictures were sent focus on the wheels, i don't have context if these are front or rear.

As an aside i note that this particular tyre is worn too.

Look forward to comments / replies.

Cheers

On my car these are held on with a kind of black plastic rivet and not steel bolts. You require to remove these when taking the bumper off so have a good look for a reason for the bumper being off. Other than that you can buy the push in rivets on ebay for a couple of quid a pack.

Sorry just realised this is the front wheel. I answered without my specs on. My wife is away out in the car just now so cannot check for you.

Someone has had the bumper off and buggerd up the rivets.....front bumper or arch liner needs removing for various things inc to just fix the pop up light washers, so I wouldnt worry to much.

Rivets like the other side of the arch as said , do not buy the ebay ones the heads snap of before they tighten up I found and you need a plastic rivet gun to fit them .
Bald tyres doesn't show much caring ownership and these cars can't cope with big differences in thread depth or the 4wd will be strained and it's a bit late for tyre shine when they are slicks !!!!!!!!! :P

To be honest I bought the ones you pry the centre pin and head out and they can be reused, no requirement for rivet gun, just push in.

Hi all thanks for your helpful replies.

I think I'd agree with above comment around its prob been removed for other work and not put back properly.

That said this particular car has sold, so it's gone.

Interestingly another I've seen is good but its passenger side tyre seems to slight more outer edge wear than drivers side. Any idea why?

For other queries on the one I saw today I'll post questions shortly...

These cars are very heavy on tyres especially the fronts. Any play in any of the front suspension joints or incorrect tyre pressures can cause this. As can incorrect wheel alignment which is best taken to a specialist with the proper 4 wheel alignment rig to check.

They should advise if any of the suspension components are worn in order that they are replaced prior to alignment being done. The cost of this can vary between £75 and £150ish to get done.

75 - 150 - for alignment check right?

I figured this is what the car needs, though they said it been done as part of PDI but i'm not convinced.

PS - i've not bought this car in question, but highly doubt i can use this as negotiating point - they seem fixed.

Cars are heavy and if the pressures are not checked edge wear can be quite rapid with faster driving making it worse.

Unfortunately where I live there are limited places that offer 4 wheel alignment so it is a licence to print money :headbang:
