Which models have the staggered setup?

Post by Jenks » Sat Aug 03, 2019 9:55 am

Hello all,

I’m on the hunt for a 08/09 E70 30d SE.

I’ve spend the last week reading through the E70 forum, it’s helped me pinpoint down exactly what I’m looking for.

I’ve read a lot recently about the staggered wheels setup, can I ask is this just on larger wheels, generally M Sport?

Reason I ask is I’m only looking for 18” 209’s on my SE, therefore when buying I know that I won’t have any issues with mixed tyres on the car (preventing transfer box damage)

Hope this makes sense

Any advice is welcome

Jenks

Staggered set ups are available in all models of E70 depending upon what was ordered with the car, or has been added later. It tends to be the 19” and larger wheels. Many owners went for larger sizes at build simply because the smaller wheels look a bit lost in the wheel arches even though the outer diameters are the same.

Mixing tyres is just one of the risks, tread depth is also important as even with non-staggered you need to stay within a limit and changing tyres as a set is still the safer way to go. Not using ‘*’ marked tyres is safer with non-staggered wheels but the other risks remain.

Thanks for the advice.

Did the 209’s only come in 18” alloys? Or are they also available as 19”. Just helps with my search on autotrader.

Hi,

I have a, August 2007 build, registered 2008, E70 3.0d SE that I bought in Nov 2008. It's a 7 seater and came with staggered 19" wheels - I assume because the larger rear wheels (285 x 45 x 19 111V - note 111) have additional load carrying capacity they are needed if all 7 seats are used + luggage. The fronts are 255 x 50 x 19 107V. Perhaps this helps your search...

Thanks Graeme, that is really helpful in narrowing down my choice, I’m only after 5 seats so that will help.

Much appreciated

209 Style only listed as 18”

All of the wheel options should be showing on Realoem - copy of BMW Parts database and kept up to date.

5 & 7 seaters come with the same choices of sizes. ‘Staggered’ is more about style than much else. Only our 2-series Gran Tourer ‘rabbit wagon’ has an 18” square set up and is a 7-seater too. No staggered option was offered. Both sets (19” & 20”) on my X6 are staggered, as are those on our E46.

Just had a look at realoem, never knew there were soo many different alloy wheels.

I think most of the SE’s I’ve seen on autotrader have 213’s fitted.

I’m only after 18” for ride quality, I assume there’s not much difference between the 18” & 19”s?

The 18” have a deeper sidewall so it is a more gentle ride. Using non-runflat tyres also helps, as does the M-Sport suspension ‘delete’ at build. It just depends upon how you like your ride. Road test a few and see how you find them. I find my 19” winter tyre set slightly better than the 20” summer set. Both are on runflats.

I wouldn't discount bigger staggered setups just to avoid transfer damage just remember you are buying a 10+ year old car and most I seen had quite high mileage when I was looking and nothing lasts forever !
If you change all 4 tyres at the same time you have made a reasonable effort to prevent it but if its's gonna go it still will :D
