2012 - E70 40d M Sport - Engine Noise / Vibration

Post by ckl139 » Mon Aug 05, 2019 8:46 pm

Hi all,

Went to view another today (35k Full BMW SH).

This is going to be difficult to explain, so i'll take from the top. Looked around the car, proper body inspection all looked ok, bar some cosmetic issues.

Then thought let me turn engine on... seemed to start fine, but i noticed aside from the usual diesel chatter once engine on and idle,

1. There was another dull droning sound in background....
2. I also noticed that the steering wheel was also vibrating , not wildly, but its noticeable and more so than my straight 6 E46.

I have video in MP4 format but doesn't seem easy to share, main thing it shows is that the Engine cover is moving.

Any advice / views?

Is this normal or is it sign of something wrong?

Many thanks as a appreciate this is not easy to describe in a forum.

Mine is as smooth as silk - for a 6 pot diesel. I would say that sort of vibration indicates an issue. The only ‘drone’ I get is from the ac fans, but that’s more like an aircraft trying to take off at present with this warm weather!

My steering wheel doesn’t move either.

The alternator has a drone and there is a recall to change a plastic pully at the minute.

Hi

Many thanks super useful to know as it confirms issue.

Just to check when you say yours is smooth - do you mean no vibration at idle on steering wheel?

Also anyway to video share as I'd like to show engine cover movement and see if you guys have that....

Thanks for heads up about recall.

Hi all

Just by way of update i went to see another 40d today, more so to check out vibration and compare.

The other 40d has a bit less vibration which leads me to conclude that my concerns of this one are some what warranted.

The garage hasn't came back to me with anything, doubtful they will as they seem to think its normal which it isn't

I wouldn't say my sd has much vibration but I can feel a bit through the footrest at idle,at 35k there is unlikely to be much wrong but there is always one bad one about !

Yeah i know, but in comparison to the other one, the vibes were quite high...

doing searches online it's also difficult to pin point these things...and not sure even on here people know common cause ?

Its running uneven...could be a vac leak or a sensor....if it is genuine 35K and a good price i'd buy it and code read it...it may have been sat there and loads of startups and needs a good thrashng as it may need a regen of the DPF.....

Its 18k comes with 6 month autoguard warranty but they said they'd do a bit more.

Bit of a gamble to buy if turns out big issue no?

That aside... the plot thickens (again)

I called the trader and they said they have now sent it to their workshop to be looked at. They seemed to now accept the vibration is there....

Doing my own research I thought it could be engine mounts but at that mileage?

PS here is video of the issue https://youtu.be/aleJrzkOWYo

No shortage of these cars why buy one that seems not quite right ? Its only going to lead to hassle to get it repaired and that's even if they can find whats wrong quickly !

Agree. This particular one is best condition I've seen, low mileage, bmw service etc.

I'll see what / if they come back. But have decided not going to purchase if not resolved or explained upfront.

I have seen two suggestions for ‘shuddering’ with the twin-turbo versions. One being after a long run and the twin turbos not working properly causing bad airflow at the intake? Yours is cold so that doesn’t fit but the other one might.

It is suggested that the lock-up clutch on the torque converter may be dying that’s a box out to get to the TC and change it. Cheap(ish) in parts £300 or so but pricy for labour so check the warranty terms very carefully!

Other than that, fuel injection system is mentioned.

All suggest getting a code read done with a BMW scanner. Generic readers won’t find all codes, or decode them in a usable form.
