Gap insurance?

Post by Minda » Sun Aug 01, 2010 6:08 pm

Hi due to take delivery of a new X5 in september and was wondering about taking the gap insurance, the dealer price seems excessive, looked around on the net and found it around half the price, via autotrader, just want a little advice pros/cons? is it worth paying the dealer prices?

If you have the car on Finance, the GAP payment as a general guide is usually equal to 1 monthly Finance payment. I got mine from the dealers just because I didn't want there to be any issues if (hopefully not) I ever had to claim as the dealers should provide you with a comprehensive cover suitable for your vehicle.

Generic GAP insurance products can be found much cheaper on the internet as you have found. It is always worth haggling with the finance guy at the dealer. To give you an idea, when I purchased my e61 520d I took out Tyre insurance. I was qouted £295 for 3 years cover and got it for £200 around the price of 1 tyre. I have to say that odds of calling on a GAP policy is pretty slim and as such needs to be competitively priced to justify. However tyre insurance is worth every penny IMO

Will look into that to, was the Tyre insurance taken through the dealer?

My Tyre insurance was through the dealers... £300 for 2 years and up to 4 Tyres (2 in any one year). I thought that this was ok considering my rear tyres were over £310 each. Well worth having but that said... not used it in a year :(

Yeah, the fronts need doing soon... would be a shame if a big nail went through the tyre too close to the wall to repair...

Well you have had a lot of work done to the house recently, I'm sure during the cleanup some screws or nails were left lying around. I saw them :-)

On this topic, any recommendations on the after market GAP and Tyre Insurance companies ?

Had a little trawl with google and there are fair few out there or willing to combine research on this as will look to sort out ahead of my E70 coming in october :-)
