Vehicle Recall

Had correspondence from BMW yesterday regarding a safety recall.

"As part of ongoing quality analysis at BMW, it has been established that the front propeller shaft on your vehicle may be subject to premature wear. This may lead to corrosion resulting in noise or vibration. After prolonged driving under such conditions, the universal joint may eventually break and the drive torque for the front axle can then no longer be transmitted."

Anyone else had this.

Yes, mine is in on Monday. As they have said it will be required all day and not just the 2 hours stated in the letter, guess they will be changing the shaft.

It only takes an hours labour to change the shaft.  2 hours should easily cover it.

What if the shaft has already been inspected as a QE and not changed like mine was back end of last year?
Wonder if I will now get a letter as it is now a Safety Recall?

You’ll get the letter, it’s seems to be getting sent to everyone who didn’t get a replacement driveshaft.

This actually started back in 2013 but the scope of vehicles has increased in recent weeks.  Mine was one of the first changed when it was a QE whereas it is now a recall.  Probably due to the number of global incidents and worldwide complaints.  It has taken BMW a very long time to accept this is a real, and potentially dangerous, fault.

Safety rules in Europe are just not tough enough.  Recalls elewhere in the world are mere QEs here.

Recieved my letter, the wording still suggests it’s an inspection even though they had it in back in December

Tried to book mine in today. Service manager states they are not taking anymore bookings at the moment as they have run out of parts required and not sure when a new stock will arrive due to all the recalls. Told to keep trying each week.  :(

Managed to get booked in for Monday next week, they must have a new stock of parts now. Will report back when it's done. To be honest I can't feel anything with the car at the minute but hopefully will get the work done anyway.

Mine doesn’t need doing again as it was replaced a few years back.  Still getting them to have a quick look when the wheels are swapped back next week.

Had the car in on Monday. They replaced the Artic disc for the propshaft, whatever that is.
They did a health check and found a broken rear coil spring :-(

Articulated disc?  Can’t see anything obvious on Realoem as that only has complete shafts.
