Potential new owner looking for a decent winter weapon

Hi all,

I'm an E46 M3 and T6 TSI van owner looking for a cheapish all/4 wheel drive winter run around snow toy - capable of a trip from UK to Poland with the fam also in safety comfort etc this Christmas.

Have been eyeing up V8 cherokees (with LPG conversion) as are capable bits of kit so I gather, but an X5 looks like a way better road runner and the interior is far superior.

Was looking at V8 X5s but realised the pre-facelift ones within budget have no X drive so are potentially useless off roaders by comparison. So a newer X Drive model with winter rubber should be good for not getting stuck in potentially snowy Polish Mountains?

Hi and Welcome,

You’ve mentioned the all important winter rubber. 4x4s can only do so much on summer tyres, but winter tyres transforms them and in truth even two wheel drive cars. For that reason I wouldn’t discount the earlier V8 models. Good luck with the hunt, and let us know what you settle on.

Don.

Hi and welcome to the forum
I wouldn't rule out pre facelifts because of the lack of Xdrive. The pre facelift still has a 60/40 split 4 wheel drive system, or unlike discos or range rovers of the same era, apart from no low ratio and diff locks.
Snow tyres are the Key, as mentioned.
The downside of pre facelifts are the 5 speed gearbox isn't as reliable( they are made of cheese 😳 ) And there are a few now eating their cam chain tensioner.
What is your budget, and are you set on a V8 and wouldn't entertain a Diesel ?
