tyre issue........who's got very wide wheels

Post by shadrack » Tue Mar 10, 2015 10:17 pm

so im having a slight problem with the ml63, i think its the tyres...the issue has only recently came to light, partly due to me over inflating the tyres, the dryer weather and partly (from info i can find) its worse as the tyres get older and more worn and its seems to occur mostly with continental tyres, info ive come accross relates to nearly new 911s and some volvo models.

I have 295/45/19 tyres on the front of the ml and if you steer full lock and go forward or reverse (much worse in reverse) the tyres seem to almost wind themselves up like an elastic band due to the difference in turn speed between the outer and inner edge of the tyre, they sort of scrub accross the tarmac.

I have had 285 fronts before but they were always ultra low profile with no room the scrub if that makes sense, and i used ditchfinders on the 22s so either they didnt grip enough or have a high enough side profile.

here is the vid of the issue on a 911...........

Feature of the product I expect.
Only way out is either pump em up, not recommended, get thinner tyres, don't do full lock or live with it..
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

hmm, i was thinking of changing the wheels for either 20/21/22 as my 19s are little babies, the noise isnt as loud in mine as the vid, presuming that its just because the 911 is a smaller car so its more noticeable, its also alot worse on certain surfaces that are presumably more grippy

Could be a camber issue but how would you go about changing that ???

i was thinking it could be a tracking/ alignment issue, might get the tracking checked, i havnt been too far into it as was toying with px ing it in against something else as ive had it 6 months now, if i keep it im going to mod it wheels, lowered a little, and new discs and caliper refurb so it woild maybe end up accidently sorted if i keep

It's like when you have a proper 4x4 with the diff locks on, has the ML got a limited slip diff, maybe needs an oil change in the diff :)
