Changing wheels

My E84 M Sport has staggered wheels, fronts are 225/45/R18 and rears 255/40/R18. I'm considering putting a spare set for the winter months, can I change to square set up and a smaller size (17) and if so would this affect handling etc?

Have a look at the tyre pressure plate (usually on the Driver’s side ‘B’ pillar) as it has all of the approved wheel & tyre sizes.
The chances are that the answer is almost certainly yes. They won’t affect handling as the OEM winter sets are usually a square setup. You may find they could even be as small as 16” depending upon what size your brakes are.
