X1 With Comfort Access Towbar Fitting Help!

Hi Everyone,

We recently bought an X1 as an all rounder and to tow. At the garage we asked about towbar fitting and they recommended not using BMW as it’s so expensive. We started looking in to it and a few companies said that they won’t fit as the car has the comfort access boot sensors (where you waggle your foot underneath to open).

Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue and how they overcame it? It’s not a drama if we can’t use the boot sensor but wouldn’t want it to be unsafe ie. boot opening randomly after towbar fitting or loss of use of the keyless access to the doors

Thanks 😊

Have you talked to someone like P F Jones in Manchester? They will know it there is an option to fit an aftermarket version. Several of the offerings in their website do list Comfort Access equipped cars as being an ‘exclusion’ for towbars. P F Jones do also have a national fitting service. The aftermarket fitters won’t have the tools to recode your car.

BMW themselves have warning about modules and coding for the official retrofit kit - and if the E53 official fit was anything to go by, that was a £2k plus cost 10 years ago so could be frighteningly expensive now. They used to take most of the interior out to run cables back to the front of the car.
