X1 Potential Purchase

Post by 55NF » Thu Mar 28, 2013 5:33 pm

Has anyone got one of these? & what are they like to live with ?  Changing the 1 Series & might go fo one so long as BMW do 19" wheels for them.    I have an e70 X5 with 20" alloys & might get the wife the X1.    I like the wheel arches to be filled out though so do not want 18" wheels as they look Naf.

Any advice ?  I like a nice looking beefy car like my X5  as I'm still a young lad at 42  :)  not ready for 17" rim boring style yet!
Thanks

A friend of the family has one. Moved to it from an E Class saloon. She loves it.

There is an article on them in this months BMW Car mag iirc.

I'll get a copy of that tmrw.  It looks 'ok' but that's all really.  The X Drive interests me with the continuos snowy weather.

All X models apart from pe-facelift E53 have xdrive unless sdrive spec X1 & F25 X3. A used Xdrive F25 would be my choice if buying used X and wanting something a little more discreet/smaller than E70.

Not driven an X1 - I find they can look a bit cheap with some cloth interiors.......face of car not prettiest thing either IMO.
Gone - 2002 E53 X5 4.4i Sport (Pre Facelift) Owned 2006-2016.

Sounds very familiar,
I have an e70 msport also, and my wife has a 1 series msport ,  owned since new and just turned 3years old,
She picks up her new x1 xline xdrive tomorrow,,
Upgraded wheels to staggered 18" polished face style 323 wheels,
19"  only available on the msport model and are same design as the 3series e92/93 225m wheels, look good on the coupes and convertibles but  not on the x1 (IMHO),
Test drive proved to car be a good option considering Scottish winters (got 18" alloys and winter tyres when haggling !),,  young kids and also offers a "little" more room than the 1series (based on 3 series estate platform)
Not a bad base spec, but as you would expected added a few trimmings !!

Bought an x1 September 2011 2.0d xdrive for the wife she has always had Hondas but loves this , tried an Audi A4 and A3 but liked the driving position better , it has been good on fuel and as we bought it new the dealer threw in the 5 year service package for free but it was only £300 extra anyway the Audi was £1800 extra .
We got the sports seat package and a tow bar , the tow bar was £750 option but when we paid for the car it was only £450 extra and run flats had been fitted free worth a look into this if you want one , the only thing we wished we had ordered was an auto box as my x5 is auto and makes  life a bit easier .
I bought some genuine BMW 19" wheels style 311 they did them as a cost option but not in the brochure , they are staggered too so fill the arches fronts are 225/40/19 rears 255/35/19 if you want a picture of them on the car pm me with your email address .

Just specced this on the BMW config

The 19" V-spoke style 324 light alloy wheels can be fitted to an SE or Sport.  The  xDrive18d SE would be adequate & I think it looks ok with these 19's.  As you rightly say the 225m alloys belong ONLY on the 3 series... I had these on my 335d.

The 1 Series is coming up to three years old & is now too small with my 6 month old.    It goes back soon so need to get something on order.

Looked at the new Audi A3 & imo it isn't a patch on the BMW's.  I always find myself coming back to BMW.

So decison time, either another 1 Series diesel sport with deleted sport suspension, or an X1!

My wife bought an E84 LCI in September last year.  She went for the xDrive20d xLine with this spec:

Black Sapphire
Oyster Nevada leather with yellow/black piping
Media Pack Pro - Nav Pro, Enhanced Bluetooth and USB Audio Interface
Driver Comfort Pack - Parking Distance Control front/rear, Cruise Control w/brake and Extended Int Light
Visibility Pack - Auto Dim Rear-view mirror, Headlight wash, Rain Sensor auto headlight, Xenons, Adaptive Headlights and High-beam assist
Sun Protection Pack - Windscreen with grey shade band and Sun protection glass
Auto Gearbox
18" Y-spoke 322 alloys
Comfort Access
Reversing Assist camera
Ext mirrors folding, auto dimming
Electric front seats with driver memory
Seat heating front
Fine wood trim
Drive performance control
Voice control
DAB radio
Loudspeakers - business
Telephone USB interface
Mobile App prep
Headlining Anthracite

She previously had a 335d and after the snow last year wanted to move to a 4WD and the 3's weren't yet available.  She hasn't looked back and has been really happy with it.  The only issue we had (see other thread in X1 forum) was that in January, I noticed that the BMW Assist was missing (possibly as it was an early LCI?).  The dealer investigated and agreed to rebuild the car - the new one only arrived yesterday.

The one thing that I really didn't like about the xLine X1 was the hard steering wheel and heavy steering at low speeds.  It seems you can only order the better leather wheel on the MSport. On the latter, it has been fixed in the replacement car that came yesterday!  Apparently BMW received a lot of feedback on it and changed it.

I drive a E70 LCI 40d MSport and the things I notice in comparison are:
Positives
- smoother ride on the 18" runflats :)
Minor negatives
- Dash doesn't feel quite as upmarket (but you would kind of hope so!)
- Comfort access sounds a bit nosier and only works when touching front handles
- No top down view on reversing camera

All pretty minor though.

Took the Xdrive 4WD X1 out today & didn't like it at all.    Can't see three years of ownership with one of these.  The styling just isn't right imo & the back end looks all wrong at closer inspection. Evem with 19's the wheels look lost in the arches.    Different car, but I'd prefer another 1 Series Sport to the X1.

Thanks for all the help & comments etc but it's looking like the 3 Series Tourer at the moment.

Must admit the 3 Series more my style.  I know they're ten a penny but still a decent looking car, great perforamnce, spacious & comfortable ride.  They look more planted & 'inshape' thne the X1 also.  Nice with 18 or 19 wheels.  60MPG is very good & I know BMW figures quoted aren't that far off that as I'm getting 56  - 57 with the 1 Series on a long run
