As above it has stopped working all of a sudden. Can anyone tell me the location/colour/amps of the relevant fuse please?

ok, so it's not the fuse. I noted that the same fuse covers the rear screen wash and that is working.

So......... has anyone had to replace the rear wiper motor - easy? costly?

From the BMW TIS.....

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e53- ... er/C2EnPWJ.

All of the pre-requisite processes are on there too (blue links on pages) and most if not all of the ‘special tools’ referred seem to be unnecessary.  There are links to those and the tightening torques for everything.
