Post by Zedhed » Mon Aug 27, 2018 6:39 pm

Evening all.turning steering wheel today,i suddenly heard a crunch and then airbag light came on.would this be the rotary coupling thats gone west.took it apart and taken it off but nothing visible.only thing i noticed on the coupling is there is a red tab on the edge by the part n.o which looks like it snapped but aint got a clue what it does.any ideas peeps.

Sounds like you may be better getting the codes read, is the part you have stripped just a slip ring or a combined slip ring and Steering Angle Sensor .

Plug a code reader/diagnostic scanner in and it will tell you what faults you have with your car.

Got the codes read and got MRS4_OD,which is high frequency resistance on the positive and negative,so as i heard the rotary coupler go crunch i assume its that.on dis57 though its saying codes were not selectable or deletable whatever that means.

It means the fault is most likely permanent and cannot be reset until the cause is resolved  :(

You will forgive my ignorance but what do you mean by the Rotary Coupler. Looked through the the parts list and can’t find anything of that name. When you say you heard a crunch and airbag light came on did you still have steering.

The part the wiring attatches to behind the steering wheel, which allows steering wheel to turn without mangling all the wires up

Just off of interest there was a safety recall for the e53 steering wheel airbag, have you checked if yours has been done? Might save a bit of faffing if it needs a new one anyway for free.
