Door handle kaput

Post by Murphybarnes » Mon Dec 17, 2018 6:19 pm

Came away in my hand. Can still exit the vehicle just not enter it. Is this a carrier replacement or is there other bits involved?

Looks like a new carrier required to me. Easy peasy. £20 tops.

It's the piece of metal here that broke. Is this part of the carrier assembly?

Yes that is part of the carrier .
The 10mm nut on the end of the handle is the connection undo it and turn the handle round to 6 oclock and it will come off.

Ok thanks. I do not have the carrier yet. I removed the 10mm nut to get the handle flush and back in place until I repair it. Unfortunately I dropped and lost some sort of metal sleeve from around that area and hoping all parts come with the assembly.

The only bit you need is the 10mm bolt in the end of the handle and nut the rest comes with the new carrier.

from my experience, the tolerances of the carrier are so tight that the cheaper ebay item didnt work for me more than a few weeks before the problem started reoccurring.
i ended up buying a genuine part from bmw and had no further problems.
i'm usually all for cheaper parts, but in this case i personally feel its a false economy. :)

I found the one from the dealer wasn't much more expensive than the one GSF were offering me.

OEM for me. I also had to buy a new door handle as the lug that locates the front of the handle in the carrier was too worn to keep it in place. Bought the handle in primer and then bought the spray can from BMW as well.
All good now :D

I also have had this problem for the last year - i made thr mistake of buying cheap parts from China - (bought 4 times) and all four times they all broke within 3 to 6 weeks.

The last time i tried to fox it my self , i managed to mess up my drivers door where there is no power to it (most probably due to the number of time i have had to remove the window switch to remove the door card) now i cant operate any of the windows or does the door light work when the door is open or the alarm work.

Its hard to get in with 2 kids ! Its a headache!

Can anyone help to get mine fixed ... properly ... happy to drive down ...

Thanks
Yours Helpless X5 driver

Hope all had a wonderful new year!
