Voice control keeps activating itself

Hi all,
It’s been a while since I was active so I’ll introduce myself again; I’m chris and I’ve got a 2001 E53 4.4i.
It’s got a strange and really annoying fault which it’s had for a while but I just haven’t got around to looking into it until now, I’ve tried searching here and in the web to no avail. The voice activation just keeps randomly coming on and there dozens t seem to be any obvious causes, my first thought was a loose connection in the phone mount in the armrest but not that, next most obvious seems to be the steering wheel activation button which will be my next point of call but I wanted to see if anyone here may be able to shed any light or had possibly come across anything like this?
The interim fix to shut the thing up is I’ve pulled the 7.5 amp fuse from the boot but this has just killed all audio so no handfree or radio.
