Post by thedweeb » Sat Oct 30, 2010 11:37 pm

Hi all,
My x has developed a knocking sound from what I think is the front left, which I can only hear when I go over bumps in the road ,so Im thinking Sway link . Am I on the right track.

Possibly could be ball joint or wishbone or for that matter any one of a number of rubber bits that wear, worn thrust bushes usually cause vibration under braking.

Noises not entrirely limited to suspension.

Excess wear to sway link/ARB's visible to eye. Shouldnt be hard to inspect & easist eway to see if its them is to disconnect then drive over some potholes - if noise gone then they are the culprit. Obviously new ones would be order of the day in that scenario.

Not done this myself & my comments only what I read ages ago within an article to check E46 ARBs - maybe a 2nd opinion may be of benefit before you start messing.

Hi Dweeb

Sound very much like what happened to mine and that was diagnosed as the drop link.

Darren

I had terrible wobble through the steering wheel under braking. Had Item 10 on the diagram replaced and all is well.

Regards

Dean

I have a slight knocking under braking and the MOT advisory was for bush #7. Can you get the bush by itself, or does the entire arm (#6) need replacing ?

You can get the bush seperately but you would need a press to get the old one out and the new one in.

You can get the poly type bushes from polyflex if you don't want change them every 40,000 miles or so, but on the down side you feel more of the potholes in the road through the steering
