Where it breaks on the carriage you can do a 'temp' repair by securing it with a tie wrap to hold it in place. Some say it lasts...but I would rather do the proper fix.....

Well I removed my door handle carrier today and there's nothing wrong it! I even fitted my new one which made no difference! So fitted my old carrier again and returned the new one!
Any other ideas as to why I cant open my door from out side?  :-[

Mine's just gone.  I have a warranty but with a £100 excess.  I won't bother with the cable tie repair and will probably claim but I just wondered whether there are other causes of not being able to open from the outside (the inside is fine) as if it could be a simple fix (something disconnected or an easy to fix cheap part) I'd consider doing it myself.

I just had mine replaced on Warranty and while they were at it got them to look at some other bits in order to get the most out of my £100 excess. Not worth my time to save £40-50 by doing it myself.

I'm thinking the same myself but regarding the excess, my understanding is that if there are 3 things that need doing it's £300.  As it happens my rear brake lights are playing up.  The fix (for the lights) is probably simple from what I've read or at least there's a good chance it will be.  I've tried one thing but have a few others to test.  I wish I didn't feel the need to do this but with the terms being what they are regarding diagnostics and the excess policy I can't risk just taking it in.

I'm not sure what Warranty you have, but mine is the extended BMW Warranty. I have taken mine in on numerous occasions under Warranty. If you have a list of issues to address, it falls under one claim and therefore only one excess payment. Warranty is an insurance policy... if you had your car vandalised you wouldn't pay window excess on each window, and excess on each panel for repair - it would be one claim, one excess.

If you are unsure, just call the Service Department and they will clarify. They will not record / report to the Warranty company so there is no risk to ask the question.

I have the BMW insured warranty too.  The wording says you have to pay the first part of any claim for each claim incident which I might be misinterpreting.  I will check this with the dealer but if what you are saying is true it would encourage waiting to stack up a number of issues into one claim.

I've sorted the lights now though (touch wood).  I guess they may have replaced them whereas I just cleaned up all the contacts and adjusted the springs a little to make better contact.

Which is correct then - A claim can consist of multiple issues, but you cannot bring your car in 2 months later for something different and consider it under a previous claim in order to not pay the excess twice.

It seems ambiguous to me but that could work to my advantage as in my experience if insurance terms are not clear the ombudsman tends to rule in favour of the policyholder.  On this occasion I only have one matter that needs sorting and not being able to open the door is not something I want to put up with until something else goes wrong but if you are right then it's very good to know for future reference and it might help my decision as to whether or not to renew in January.

I've checked and you're correct about the excess which is great news.  I only wish I'd realised this sooner.

Good Dan, glad you have your answer.

After a couple of years doing annual payments, I decided to just start with the monthly Warranty payments which I can cancel at any time. You might consider this in January...

I nearly did that last time but for some reason the warranty isn't transferable if on monthly payments and as I've had it longer than any other car I keep thinking it's a good thing to have when it comes to selling.  That said it has nearly new tyres, nearly new brakes, will shortly have new glow plugs etc so I'll probably stick with it.  It's just about £1,000 a year or so becomes a high proportion of the value of the car.
