Sorry never removed one myself, but can imagine it being a nightmare. The reason for my reply is that some members have had DPF's not regenerating due to the glowplugs and Glowplug controllers, which are a common fault on the E53 E83 E 70 as well as all diesel powered BMW's
Get the fault codes read to see if this is the case.
I had to change my glowplugs and glowplug relay on my E83, as have several others.
The DPF will not regen if the glowplugs / glowplug relay are shot.
And I'm sure you won't want to have to take the DPF off again if you can help it.

Have you or are you sending the dpf off for a professional clean.?
Yes its definately VERY wise to do the glow plugs and controller whilst your at it, as thats probably whats caused the dpf to become blocked.
Also do you know when the last time your engine and egr thermostats were replaced, as they can be troublesome, if they dont read the correct temp, the car wont even try to regen..

I have codes for 3 glow plugs but it still regens? I have previously changed both thermostats after noticing a drop in mpg which I would of noticed earlier if it had a temp gauge but had to use the hidden menu to find the coolant temp. I’ve since got Carly, which is much easier.
