^ agree, however due to the high cost of the claim, the warranty company did send an independent engineer to verify everything and he agreed a new engine is needed.

Although I can't say exactly what damage had been caused and how, I expect the warranty company would have made sure they are completely satisfied with the diagnosis before paying out £15k!

We will never know other than if they could fix it they would so it must be a right mess, chances are crank is suspect and bores are scored ,I'm sure there will be some discount if a little pressure is applied due to age of car to get the price down to the "right" level so everyone is happy :D

Managed to get the price down a bit to around £17.3k, leaving about £2.3k to pay myself however I'm getting a lot in return for that so have to look on the bright side really. Without the warranty I'd be paying the full bill or selling the car at a huge loss (or spending months looking for used engine and all the associated hassle with that).

Quick question, the invoice says 'replace engine with exchange engine'. Would BMW actually fit a brand new engine or would it be a reconditioned ones?

Anyway should get car back this week, 2 months after initial breakdown. Must admit it's really highlighted just how good the X5 40D is, especially with the comfort seats.

I've had a 340i estate, X1 and now a 430d as courtesy cars all brand new. None of them come close to my X5 although the 40i engine is brilliant, I can see why they are so popular. Ridiculously fast and mine was an estate, can only imagine what a 40i would be like in a tiny 1 series!

The engine will be reconditioned to as new condition and they will take your old one to fix or use as parts if possible as it may be beyond repair.

I wonder what the cost of a brand new factory engine is if a remanufactured (exchange) engine is £17k fitted? Presumably it will only be a ‘short engine’ so you have to take all of the ancils off (other than water pump) the broken one and refit to the replacement? Just that is £13.5k
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

There are Reman's about a lot less than 17.5k

I'm going to speak to them properly tomorrow when I collect the car. As I said earlier though, WD sent an independent engineer to verify everything and he confirmed new engine was needed so whatever caused it, it was pretty major!

Just spoke to them and no video unfortunately, they said the independent engineer took pics so might be able to get off him.

Also told me they had carried out a new recall which had just come on their system for some wiring to do with the heating, apparently it burns out which mine had done. Might be worth checking for other owners!

Heating wiring... I’ve got codes for that auxiliary heater faulty on my 4.0d too. Seems it may be the same problem the recall is about.
Will ring dealer tmrw am.
