2010 E70 X5 3.0d - Water Pool in Engine Bay

Mon Apr 05, 2021 10:07 am

I changed the discs and pads all round on the car late yesterday afternoon, when getting access to the brake fluid reservoir I noticed a pool of water in the compartment below it.

I'll have another look today but my initial thought were corrosion trap!

Not sure how this water got in there but guess it was from a car wash the day before, anyone else had this issue?

Thanks

Good catch! It should drain into the wheel arches. You might have clogged drains - it’s quite common.

Just sorted this last month again for the second time ,had a swimming pool in there last year IN DRIVERS SIDE  the drain hole is far too small and clogs easily , giveaway was always a wet patch when it was parked even though it hadn't been raining for hrs as it slowly leaked out. There is an electric box low down in there too water was lapping into ..Its all covered in so you would only see it if in at the master cylinder .

The drains on each side have a rubber bung with one way valve that soon picks up dead leaves etc - leave them and they'll compost giving you a self watering cabbage patch!! After taking off the plastic covers over the brake fluid reservoir and the other side you'll unfortunately need arms with a second elbow/wrist to get in at them!!! Take out the rubber bung, wash the debris through the hole, clean the bung and replace. I find it's a twice yearly job - catkins in spring and fallen leaves in autumn. C'est la BMW vie!!!

Thanks for the advice, had an oil change and air spring to change out today so had another look...

I used a hand pump to pump out a number of litres of water!! What is the little electrical box in there? Fully submerged!!

Managed to scrape out a good quantity of debris and leaves even had a live water boatman swimming around in there!!

Didn't come across the bung, although I could only barely get my arm and hand in there!!!

Is the bung engine or wing side?

I just put a long screwdriver down and tilted it sideways towards drivers side as that's where the water should go and then a whoosh of water

The oval shaped bungs are at the bottom of each well and are awkward to reach by hand! The one on the driver's side under the brake fluid reservoir seems to have a little more room. I've now swapped my E70 for an F15 so I'll need to take a look and see how different it is!
