40d m-sport Engine Knock

Post by PaulSwalwell76 » Sat Feb 17, 2018 8:04 pm

Evening All,

Well further to my previous posts - Please can someone shed some light on the following issue??

October 2017 - Snapped prop shaft, Punctured Sump = Hefty Bill

January 2018 - Prop shaft replaced, new sump, new differential, New EGR Valve + Cooler = Vehicle running with some issues

February 2018 - As above, Mechanics find Vehicle has been chipped, ECU returned back to factory settings & Updated to latest software, diagnostic performed & Vehicle showing small turbo fault - Amber Engine Light Remains
All week Vehicle has run smoothly apart from lack of boost!! After driving 55 miles today Engine starts knocking really bad, Stopped Vehicle then restarted - Knocking really bad at idle, knocking really bad at low & high revs - Vehicle now back on the drive

Could anyone please give me some feedback of similar knocking or where to look tomorrow once I start the vehicle again!! I’m now at the end of my patience with this - I am £4500 in already with the above repairs.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Get a code read with a genuine BMW reader, or reader software.  That should tell you why the warning light is on.

If the sump took a clout then there will be the possibility of debris in the oil and impact to the bottom end.  You might be hearing a failing main bearing on the crankshaft.  That would be an engine out and rebuild job.  If it is the bottom end then driving is not a good idea in case the fails and throws a rod.

X5Sport,

Thanks for the reply, I’ve got a ODBll reader would this do ?? Or are you suggesting taken the vehicle to a main dealer ?? I’m absolutely done in now with this vehicle

If there is someone with a Carly system (on this Forum and close to you) who can plug in that might help.  It’s just a dongle that plugs into the OBDII port and talks to either an Android or IOS app.  You can send the log to Carly for them to have a look too.

I’ll try and sort that out mate, cheers
I’m going to plug my diagnostic tool in this morning so I’ll send you the codes it’s throwing up if you wouldn’t mind having a look and if you can shed some light on them

I’m also going to take the underside cover off & see if I can see anything untoward, I’ll also send a video of the knocking noise [emoji1303] I’m hoping it’s something flapping or loose as that’s what it sounds like.

I’m struggling to work out how the engine has been running for so long without a hitch & then it suddenly starts doing this.

Could this be a vacuum noise ??

I don’t have a list of codes to work from, sorry.  If they are generic codes then a web search is pretty much the only way to track down the issue.  Got a couple of computers to build today so away most of the time.

The folks on here will help where we can though  :)

What type of noise is it?, a heavy knock can be the bottom end, a rumbling noise mains, clattering noise piston or cam chain. Also with a diesel a defective injector can give rise to an unholy racket from the top of the engine.

Hi Ian,

I’m trying to upload a video but can’t seem to do it on here, the noise seems to be coming from the drivers side of the engine bay!! More like a ticking that increases when I rev the engine ?? The I drive is showing no faults but my ODBll scan tool is giving the following codes:

P0034
Turbo/Supercharger bypass valve control circuit low

P0245
Wastegate solinoid “A” low

P0031
H02S heater control circuit low bank 1 Sensor 1

P0101
Mass/volume Air F low A circuit range performance

P245C
EGR cooler bypass control circuit low - EGR Assembly Just been replaced

P3280
Undefined Code ??

Live Data is as follows:

Calc Load is between 40.00 - 41.17 %
Coolant temperature 32 degrees
MAP 99Kpa
Engine Speed is between 677 - 689 rpm
IAT 10 Degrees
MAF 416.62 g/s
TPS 90.58%
O2SL 11
OBDSUP EOBD
RUNTM 275 sec

All,

I’m not a 100% but I think the tapping sound could be from the lifters ?? I performed the BMW bleeding procedure that states run the engine between 2500 - 3000 rpm for 3 Minutes once engine oil is at correct pressure - I s**t myself at the noise & only done it for 29 seconds

Alright Glen,

Yeah figured that might be the case, cheers.
I’m trying to do that now!! Just hope I can get it in so people can maybe verify the sound of Lifter Ticking.
I’ve watched a few videos today on YouTube & it definitely sounds the same to me!! I just absolutely shat myself when the noise was happening at 3000rpm as per the bmw procedure

Try taking the oil filler cap off and see if the noise / tapping is louder.

Horizon,

Need to add more oil according to the idive, I’m presuming that if the noise is louder with the oil filler cap off!! It indicates it’s at the top of the engine ??

Cheers

Paul
