2007 E70 Gearbox Selector Noise

Post by zarehs » Tue Mar 06, 2018 11:00 am

Hi All,

Newbie here, just purchased an E70 with 95K on the clock, to all intents and purposes a genuine car.  I've done about 120 miles in it without missing a beat, but in the last day or so when move the gear to N or R or P, i get a mechanical noise, or ratcheting of about 5 seconds.  This happens intermittently.  No noise when selecting D, and the car drives fine.  Sods law with a new purchase!

Here's a link to a video by someone else, the noise is pretty much the same:

I'm going to get it checked out, I'm based in North London just wanted your thoughts on which would be the best gearbox specialists to go to, would you recommend STA in Aylesbury, or Mister Transmission in Charlton SE London?  Both appear to be good.

I may get them to do a gearbox service as well.

Any thoughts on my problem and recommendation for gearbox specialists in London are welcome.

Hi. Welcome to the forum.

I have exactly the same on mine, started around 6 months ago now.  Occasionally I get a message on the idrive saying about P not being available that clears after a second as well.  Firstly it is an electrical issue in the transmission selector so don't panic about it being a gearbox issue.  I would however recommend having the gearbox oil and filter serviced and if you can have the diff oils replaced at the same time as will save you potential bills in the future.  I had mine done around 5k ago at 75,000.

Regarding the noise you can either live with it, or, replace the gear selector.  New ones are around £620 + vat  :( so would suggest going onto REALOEM.COM finding your car, search the part number and go on ebay for a good used one.  They are anything from £80 to £200 but still alot cheaper...it will need coding by an indi if you know one.  Unfortunately I'm in Manchester and go to Darren Wood's who are ex Williams guys, very good team but doesnt help you in London.

You mention it is a recent purchase, if it's a dealer they should fix this for you.  Sorry it doesnt mention on the post.  Lovely cars, have had mine for 3.5 years now and don't want to change but you do need big pockets from time to time.

Good luck.

Thank you for your helpful response.

For some obscure reason the problem seems to have resolved itself!

I will get the gearbox service done, although a little worried that opening it up may complicate matters, or begin causing issues, which makes me think of the axiom..

'..if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I had a problem (mostly self inflicted) with the gear selector on my old E70 - that would make a lot of clicking noises, and also give the 'P may not be available' warning occasionally.

I bought one off eBay and swapped it over. It was pretty easy, and no coding required. All was fine after.
