Replaced bushes now steering jumpy/twitchy over bumps

Post by Digidick » Sun Jun 24, 2018 11:21 pm

Replaced the front control arm bushes and it’s done a good job of firming things up but has introduced a couple of issues.

- Steering wheel vibration at 70mph which I suspect getting the front wheels balanced will solve that.

- My main issue is when going over bumps in the road with a single front wheel like drain covers or even cats eyes and I’m holding the steering wheel gently it wants to flick out of my fingers and seems very sensitive/twitchy/jumpy.

My next port of call is lower control arms or just their bushes.

Any thoughts please folks?

Vibration at 70 will be wheel balance....I presume you have had a 4 wheel alignment after changing the bushes?

How worn are your front tyres? Our 20” is a nightmare when they get down near the wear bars. It more or less can steer itself on the dual carriageways where the lorries have worn the surface.

Not bad actually, I'd say 4-5mm left. They came on the car so not driven it with anything different on. I have some winter wheels coming today so might give them a bash and feel the difference.

I would get a 4 wheel alignment done now.

Had rear tyres fitted as soon as I got it and full alignment at the same time so now I've changed bushes it needs doing again but it still has that feeling even now.

Might sound daft but did you lower the car back down before tightening everything back.
If you don't bushes can twist and might cause a problem.
Never done it any other way so not sure.

Yeah had the car at the correct height.

Been thinking the Meyle Heavy Duty bushes used are perhaps a bit too HD??

Might switch with OEM or another brand?
