gearbox problem

Post by Jayx5 » Mon Oct 29, 2018 6:39 pm

on our way back with the caravan I had it in sport going up a slip road and it jumped out of gear and 'transmission failure' come up on the screen and lost all gears! I pulled over switched it off and re started it and it went back in gear ok so I drove it home and rang bmw assist who were excellent and have just picked up the car and taken it to Cooper bmw in chelmsford.
my bmw warranty runs out on November 15th so if it's serious I could be really lucky.
has anyone else had this problem?

bmw have just rung me and said it's got no gearbox codes stored but did have a code for a faulty glowplug on cylinder 2, so they have changed that and I've got to pay £165 for them to check the gearbox fluid level as fluids arnt covered under warranty!
I've just spoken to my mechanic mate who said the glow plug problem can do weird things so that might be to blame, is this true?

Wouldn't think a faulty glow-plug would affect the gearbox.

my gearbox needed a litre to top it up so hopefully that might have fixed it, hopefully no lasting damage.

Lucky you had a bmw warranty as other warranties try to wriggle out of anything. I would get an end if warranty check pretty soon so any work can be done before it expires.

they changed the glow plug under warranty but my dodgy steering wheel button and a rear door jammed  door pin isn't covered.
they did do a health check and sent me a video of it which was nice as I now need 2 rear tyres as the inners are down to 1.6mm :(
I'm gonna put my winter set on so that can wait until spring.

Did they change all the glow plugs? I would have insisted as changing one can lead to problems in others. If one is faulty is very likely the rest are on their way out too.

Exactly.....losing 1-Ltr should be obvious from the amount of oil staining underneath.  It doesn’t evaporate.

The 1.6mm tread depth rule is only for the central 3/4's of the tread so if the centre is ok there is life in the tyres yet ( just saying )  :) Id think the minimum charge was 1 litre of oil even if you need a spoonful ! If there are no leaks then it was probably low when they sold it ..
