My DPF light came on the CCC last week, thankfully I was still able to drive.

I know I need to change my coolant thermostat as the car doesn't go above 65 so I thought I might as well get that changed and the codes reset as I couldn't do it on Carley. I put that down to the thermostat not getting to temp so I'm unable to clear the codes, I also had the transfer oil and gear box oils done too and Carley couldn't reset them either.

I was advised to do the diagnostics first so I agreed then I was told that as errors 480A,481A and 4D00 are there it means I need a new DPF, I explained that the car was not getting up to temp that's why it couldn't do the regen.

The garage is an indy and said that the thermostat not getting up to temp is to do with the DPF.

Surely that's incorrect.

Dpf light will come on for various reasons ; faulty glow plug / plugs, faulty glow plug controller, faulty thermostat, faulty sensors in the exhaust and even a dodgy throttle body as I found out.....

Those codes dont mean you need a new Dpf they mean its getting excessively clogged up, get the stat sorted asap., once done buy 2 bottles of wynns dpf cleaner, pop that in with 3/4 of a tank of fuel and it should sort it...also request a regen on your Carly if it has that function otherwise you have to wait for approx 300miles.....

Get the stats changed as said mine was only getting to 65c before I changed both stats now about 90c mine was regenning but probably not for much longer if left .
You need to get something done very soon or you will need a dpf when it fully blocks although there are places can clean them out .

I had a similar problem on my 2007 E70 3.0d. It had 162k on the clock at the time. New thermostat fitted that lifted engine temp from 68 to 90. My indy couldn't get the DPF to regenerate so it went to another chap who specialises in DPF cleaning. His computer showed it was not clogged but would take a few long runs to clear it. His explanation is there is a "time bomb" in the system that puts the DPF filter problem message up onto the screen at about 160k. A trip to BMW would cost several hundred pounds. His answer - once a new thermostat is fitted to use the computer to programme the car so it believes it's had a new DPF installed. After 1000 more miles the problem has not returned and consumption improved by about 3mpg.

I got both thermostats from BMW Cotswold for £88.26 in VAT and delivered on a special next day!! These guys are fantastic!!

Anyway booked in for Tuesday, will keep you posted.

Both stats changed and temp now 90, all codes cleared.

I've tried doing a regenerate using Carley but it won't as I'm unable to clear 480A code, the 481A cleared and the exhaust back pressure code cleared too.

Could try a good run for 30 minutes or more in a lower gear than normal just one so as to keep the rev's up a bit around 3000.

Update.......

I used the Carly app to clear codes but it still wouldn't work. After researching I found out that you need to keep clearing the codes every 5 seconds, this was on done IPNA software.

So what I did is just highlight the 480A code and kept clearing that whilst on the motorway for about 15 mins before the Mrs called and ruined my rhythm.....lol

I obviously thought it hadn't worked but low and behold it did!!!! Holy sh*t it feels like a different car, so much torque.

Keeping my fingers crossed but I'm hopeful.

With my short trips I’m bound to get that 480a code.
Had it a few times and even in ISTA-d it doesn’t let you regen. I forced regen and had to drive 60 for 30 mins before carly showed soot levels drop.

Just when u thought all was good now I got error 4501 emissions high.
Any ideas?
