Engine noise

Afternoon

My 2011 30d seems to have developed a more agricultural noise when not on boost, I noticed it the other day after coming off the M23, the engine just sounds louder than usual, and seems slightly hesitant, as soon as it’s on boost it’s fine, I have plugged it to three different diagnostics and on have one error which is 49A6 which I believe is glow plug controller, the dog is regenerating fine though, I have done some live read outs and the MAF is between 3-500mg, don’t know what the values should be or if this would even cause the issue.
I have done an injector read out which I have attached, do these figures seem ok?
The noise isn’t a timing chain kind of noise, and it only does it under load and not idling like I am intermittently dropping a cylinder

On my old Merc diesel injectors they had to be matched as close as possible.

Looks like maybe you need the injectors checked, and maybe re calbrated. A good diesel injector specialist can do that. Just google for a local one.

I should have said is try a tank full of super diesel Shell or BP before going the injector route. Dirty injectors can cause all sort of problems.

Bottle of Redex in the tank may sort it too....put the whole bottle in even though it says two tank fulls

Didn’t even think about it but might be linked, normally run the car on shell v, but start of last week in a moment of desperation as the wife had left the car with only fumes in the tank I was forced to stop at Tesco to fill up!

It’s not something that I normally do, so I will hang my head in shame in the corner!

It did get its usual fill up yesterday at shell then straight onto M23. I will try and get some of the additive today and see if it clears up, I will be up and down the motorway a few times over the next few days, so hopefully that will clear it’s throat.

Why hang your head in shame? It’s all the same fuel, just different additives usually poured in by the tanker driver. We only have a couple of fuel refineries in the UK now and Shell don’t own any of them.

It would be interesting to view those readings again after you have run the cleaner through.

X5sport i was always under the impression that supermarket fuel was always lower grade? Hence the price difference? Is it just a case of additives that are added to bp/shell etc that make the difference? Interesting stuff, I never gave it a second thought.
Funny enough, Tesco are selling redex for £2 a bottle in store.
Henry, I will post up the readings again once it’s run this tank.
Hoping it’s that simple and nothing major, as I noticed (completely different issue) today reversing out of a car park space on full lock what i can only describe as tyre scrub, like it was skipping on the tarmac. All run flats, star rated with at least 6mm all around, going to check pressures in the morning from cold, hoping a diff or transfer box is not about to give me a headache

All UK supplied forecourt fuels have to be made to the same British Standard and given they come from a limited number of refineries or storage depots it’s all the same stuff. We had/have a member in here who dealt with fuels for MOD and said that the only differences are the additives put in by the tanker operator.

Supermarket fuels are cheaper because they make money from other things and are able to run at a loss if it pulls the punters in. Where there is no competition though, supermarket fuel can be more expensive. Site operating costs and local influence also drives prices along with the delivery costs.

As an example for petrol, Royal Dutch Shell & Greenergy (part owned by Tesco) and the group that produces Tesco Momentum 99 import and store the same base petroleum, they actually co-own the actual storage facilities. Both supply the same base petrol (and presumably diesel too). There are secret detergents and additives and octane boosters added and it’s these that make up the differences I read that this same group also supplies distribute ESSO petrol/diesel.

Only use supermarket fuel as that is all we have where we live but i add my own additives.
I put this in when i fill up 2 Ethyl Hexyl Nitrate.
You can get it in a smaller bottle with a measure but i have the bottles so i buy a 5Ltr can better value and decant it only thing is it stinks.
I also put mineral 2 stroke oil in as well but not always.(i forget to fill the bottle).....

Interesting indeed. Very similar composition, and dilution rate, to Millers Diesel Power Ecomax, but a lot cheaper. I may well give it a go when my current stock of Millers runs down.

The very reason i started to use it years ago.
Be warned it stinks but then so does the Millers.
You can but the dosing bottles on the bay as well be careful filling them.

My plan is to get a couple of 1ltr dosing bottles first, then when they run low get a 5ltr to decant into them.

X5sport, have to say I have never really given it much thought when it comes to where the fuel comes from, interesting read.

Going to order some of the additive from eBay that Alan posted up.

The redex seems to be making an improvement, not sure if that’s placebo, but going to get injector reading again either tomorrow or Saturday and see if any difference
