Forum upgrade

Post by sp3ctre » Mon Jun 04, 2012 9:52 am

Hi,

The forum will be going offline for a short while later today for an upgrade. Once complete you will have to login again as the forum software will be different.

I will post an announcement with more info once the work is complete.

Nice work buddy! Looks really nice.

Now how do I get the Active Posts!

Oh man - we got new smilies too!!!! :))

And attaching pics is new too - might need to delete my How To!

EDIT - Found it.

Also, check Signatures - mine is a bit big!

Ok, the move seemed to go reasonably well... a couple of caching issues along the way but it all seems to be working now.

As with all major changes some will like it and some will not. However, I would like to take a moment to explain the reasoning behing this move.

We have moved from using PHPBB to SMF. This will mean something to some of you and nothing to others. Basically there are two reasons why, security and flexibility.

The SMF software allows a lot more flexibility in terms of adding features. We have kept it fairly simple for now but going forward it should allow a bit more customisation than we had before.

The layout now lends itself to use of forum members photos (should they want to contribute). I have chosen (with permission) the one you see at the moment as it works well, but we should be able to have some variety over coming months. We'll make a separate topic to discuss this.

Spam is always an issue on forums. SMF has quite a good framework to allow us to tackle this increasingly irrirating problem. Please be patient with us over the next week or so and report any spam posts you see.

There have been requests for allowing image uploading from the post screen. While it is very expensive to support a forum that gathers hundreds upon hundreds of megabytes of photos and also back them up, we have come up with a compromise. When you go to post or reply you will see an icon below the text box. Click this icon and you will be able to upload directly to the TinyPic service and link the image to your post. You can still post using photobucket or Imageshack as before, but we hope this will make things a little easier for those less familiar with these services.

That's all for now... please let us know how you find the new site. It is a work in progress so please be gentle with it  :)

Thanks!

Not sure what is going on with the sigs, I fixed yours... I think they got messed up in the conversion.

For reference, if your sig is big go into your forum profile and simply remove the bit at the front and at the end relating to "size".

Oh, and the "problems" sections now have the feature of "topic solved". This will change the post icon to a green tick so it is easier to see at a glance which problems have been "solved:  8)

Since you're online - remember the View Active Posts link - I thought I found it, but haven't. We got anything like that still?

EDIT - noticed clicking on Home (under picture) logs me off too.

Have you guys seen the links up at the top right? Do they do what you're after?

Not sure about the logging off issue. Make sure you aren't accessing the site from a bookmark with the www. prefix. I will fix this via the server but for the time being just make sure the URL doesn't have www in it.

I think we'll have to solve the sigs one by one I'm afraid (unless I can run some ninja SQL to do it)

As for the quick reply, you can alter that in your profile, under "look and feel":

the option is "Return to topics after posting by default"
