X5 40d fuel consumption

Post by Dentistboi » Tue Jun 05, 2018 8:37 pm

Good evening

I currently have a F10 535d and am strongly considering an F15 X5 40d as I have can get a brand new one for a good deal. I know it is going to drink more given size and weight but I would like to understand what the relative MPG is likely to be. I'm mainly motorway miles. Any advice would be great!!

I would guess 30 % worse than your F10, but depending on your driving pattern and speed.

Have a look at this YT comparisons at different speed intervals: https://youtu.be/Bh_pB9ZOaQg

Basic rule of thumb is to look at the official test data and remove 25-30% and you won’t be far off.
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

I have a 2015 F15 3.0D M Sport and get around 33-35mpg on local roads, up to 37-38MPG on long journeys.
I have Comfort setting most of the time, using Sport for a quick getaway or overtaking.
I try drive at the relevant speed limit but don't thrash the car as fuel economy is down to your driving style and the dreaded right foot. Temptation is always there though  ;).
I would expect to get similar figures for a 4.0D, depending on that right foot :)).

The brochure quotes exactly the same mpg for the X5  40d and 30d at 47.1 mpg for the "combined" cycle.

Data for the F10 is showing as 47 - 49 mpg, though I found this harder to find on the internet.

Given that your miles are mostly motorway the real difference in economy is likely to depend on how fast you drive. Whilst the X5 might be pretty similar in mpg to the F10 on some cycles, the difference will be much greater if you drive everywhere at speeds in excess of 70 mph. It is then that the effect of drag will count for much more, given the X5 is a brick on wheels.

Anyway, go on, you know you want to.

It'll be allright in the end. If it isn't allright it isn't the end

My M50d does between 30-33mpg on local roads and up to the high 30s on the motorway.
So I would say low to mid 30s for the 40d similar to the 30d.

That’s pretty impressive. Are these actual figures or from the trip computer? I’m on 29.2 over 4K miles according to the trip computer. I’m sure it equates to a lot less in real terms though.
