Hi, just taken delivery on a new X3 and what a delight, cannot fault it.

Apart from from fuel consumption. It’s a petrol model so I wasn’t expecting 40mpg but I did expect over 28, as that’s what getting. I do mostly town driving with the odd country drive but is 28mpg what you’d expect in that scenario?

Done 1500 miles, will the mpg improve over time?

Should I use Eco mode to improve mpg?

Short journeys were it cools down before you drive again and has to warm up every time will really hurt mpg and stop/go town driving will do the same .That said the figures claimed now are impossible to achieve as they were probably calculated on a rolling road and also on the narrowest wheel/tyre options I suspect and wider wheels cause more drag . My x5 e70 claimed 34 mpg but in the carefullest of driving I seen 30 only once in a year , the narrowest tyres were 255 all round but I had 285 front / 325's rear tyre on so this won't help .
The only thing will improve it is a very careful driving style trying to brake as little as possible by anticipating the road ahead which will get quite boring very soon !!!!!!! :D

Just enjoy it and don't worry too much about the fuel bill, you should try running a 4.6 economically, lol.

Ours averages 33.9mpg (UK gallons), mostly.short around town journeys. On longer journeys it usually in the high 40s, once it was over 50. This is 2.0l petrol.

I was the first on here to post regards the G01 X3 2 years ago now
So far 35,000 klms done...20D X3 G01 From new Feb 2018 ….6.7 litres to 100 klms or 42.16 mpg overall
Almost identical to the Lexus 220D 2.2 I had before this BMW...being a larger heavier vehicle I class this as really good for the SUV.
