20d/30d/30sd fuel consumption

Post by Gordy007 » Sat Mar 28, 2020 11:10 am

Hi all,
Looking to buy my first X3 and I'm trying to decide between the 2litre or 3 litre diesel engine (year 2007 to 2009ish). I know the 30d/sd will be more on tax and insurance but I'm wondering what the real world mpg difference is likely to be between them both?
I'd be doing around 12,000 miles a year.
Anyone's experiences much appreciated

:hi:

It all depends on what sort of journeys your 12k/yr is going to be made-up of. Lots of stop/start commuting/shopping/school runs = 2.0. Majority of rural/motorway runs = 3.0. Remember diesels take the thick end of 10mls to get fully up to full operating temperature - especially in winter.

The advice from the pre WLTP testing started properly last year was that you take the official figures and subtract 25-30% to get ‘real’ figures. It has held true with all of my recent BMW cars since 2005.

I get 28 mpg around town and 40 on the open road, give or take a tad with my 2009 3.0D. Hope that helps. (Imperial mpg by the way) We've been metric here in Australia for years, so I had to do a quick conversion. Approx 10 & 6.5 -7 litres per 100 kms
