2006 (55 plate) E83 2.0d glow plug errors

Post by kampftrinker » Tue Feb 20, 2018 12:55 pm

Hi I have glow plug errors on cylinders 2, 3 & 4 on my car. This was found using Carly.

I'm thinking I might as well change all of them as one more won't make much difference money or time wise.

Where is the best place to get the glow plugs? Is it best to use the main dealers, or would Ebay be ok?

It may not be the glowplugs but the glowplug controller.

I changed the plugs and glowplug controller on my X3, and whilst you have the inlet manifold off do the swirl flap delete at the same time
Got my controller off EBay ( Beru is OEM ) and some do a kit with plugs too.
It's a tricky job but DIYable
Put the last 7 digits of your pin into real oem to get part numbers then google or EBay search them

Thanks for the reply,

I had thought about the glowplug controller, so I have decided to buy both glowplugs and the controller.

It looks like there are two sizes for the swirl flap delete kits so i might leave that for the following week after I have checked for the correct size (unless you happen to know what size they would be for a 2.0 diesel?)

Thanks again for your help

Regards

Contact PMW, they will know what size you need, or will supply goth sizes, and you can return the unused ones.
It's a faff taking the inlet manifold off so maybe an option to save you doing it twice

Well, everything is ordered.

This weekend I'm hoping to change all the glowplugs, the glowplug controller, the swirl flaps and both thermostats!

That should keep me out of the pub for a while....

Thanks for your help Horizon.

Buy 2 tins of Plusgas or WD40 and soak the glowplugs SEVERAL TIMES, and then some more before even attempting to remove them. ( you do t want a broken off glowplug

Hi Horizon,

Do you happen to know what the torque settings are for the inlet manifold and the glowplugs on the M47N engine. Also do you know what the coolant capacity is for this engine?

Thanks

Sorry don't know torque settings, I've been an engineer for 35 years and all we used a torque wrench for was cylinder head bolts.
You just seem to have a sense for what's right after a bit

Well, I got some of the work done over the weekend.

Both thermostats were changed, I had errors on three glow plugs, so I bought four new ones.
This went well on three of the four, glow plug number three snapped! I have found a good tutorial on removing broken glow plugs on another forum, so I will give it a go when the weather gets a little warmer.

I now only have one glow plug error (the broken one) so I am not going to change the controller yet. The engine starts much better now in the cold weather, so that's good news.

I also managed to do a swirl flap delete, this is very easy once you get the inlet manifold off.

I've got a few more error codes to sort out, but the car is running better and starting better already. I just need to find out more about what the fault codes mean and how to fix them.
