Please help me with some advice for my X3 - ABS sensors and EGR valve replaced

Post by claire weir » Mon Jun 04, 2018 6:53 pm

Hi everyone

My name is Claire and I have joined today desperate for some advice

I have joined today as think I am being taken for a fool by a local garage and would like some honest feedback and advice

My X3 is on a 55 plate and I recently had the EGR valve replaced - since then when using the accelerator if feels like it is missing and you have to put your foot down more - this isn't every time I use the accelerator but happens daily - the garage told me it will go by itself but has not - it feels like the job wasn't done properly to me - anyone know what causes this?

The second issue I have is the ABS and brake warning lights have been coming on and off for a while now - I have had both brake back sensors replaced, the steering wheel sensor and now the garage has said I need a balance sensor - I am wondering how many sensors I am going to be expected to pay for before the lights go out permanently. They have told me it could be an air gap that they have tried to get rid of without success

I have paid this garage over £1K in the past 6 months (all on my credit card) and am starting to doubt them a great deal

I am no mechanic and am hoping  by coming on here I will be told what needs to be done and any actions I need to take

Many thanks in advance  Claire

Hi Claire
Remote diagnosis is always going to be difficult

However and in reverse order, I’d check on battery condition first and foremost that maybe effecting the electronics and giving intermittent dash lights (abs)
Many places should offer a free battery health check though some are less scrupulous

The engine missing, could be a number of things, Maf Sensor would be worth checking though just as likely is injectors, you don’t state what size engine is fitted I’m assuming a 2.0d, it could be something as simple as fouled inlet manifold / sticking swirl flaps (that should be removed regardless)
Unfortunately it sounds like your garage is adopting the trial and error method to diagnose, I’d consider a more specialised garage who are used to working on BMWs and have the correct diagnostic equipment to read fault codes from the car and not use guess work!

I’m sure many on here will be along soon to better advise!

Perhaps if you gave your location somebody on here could point you in the right direction of a reputable indi garage.

Find a BMW specialist and get the codes read....your acceleration problem sounds like a vacuum leak so maybe they didn't use a new gasket seal when fitting your new EGR valve.

Thank you everyone for your comments and advice - I have had a new EGR solenoid fitted today after I did a bit of research and told the garage it may be a possibility
The ABS lights are currently off - the garage has told me the computer shows no faults with the ABS which it wont if the light isn't on - oh dear I appear to be educating them too much now - I will take it elsewhere if I have any more trouble - there is a BMW garage near where I work so will go there
Thanks again  Claire
