Acquisitions

Post by henrym3 » Sat Apr 27, 2019 10:30 pm

Haven’t been on here much lately, just covered 2.6k in two weeks, half of it towing a trailer. I have the R32 back as the grandson I gave the car to has bent it (badly) but repairable and he can’t afford either the repairs or running cost. As an interesting side note the reason his insurance didn’t pay is because he hadn’t declared the wheels have had a colour change and the front windows were tinted. The tint was legal but not declared
I was also given, yes, given a BMW Alpina B3 1999. Been sitting in a garage for 8 years. Non runner but traced that to the fuel pump. Needs some work but a really nice car. So got plenty to keep me occupied for some considerable time.
BTW X5 ran like a champ, not a single problem.

Shame about the R32, but it does highlight that any change away from ‘factory’ needs insurance approvals. I wonder how many people out there have done things like wheel colour changes, or added a legal tint but not told their insurers? I suspect it’s more than a few.

It may not make the slightest difference premium wise, but the small print on most policies is clear - make a material change to the car and you need to ask/tell them or a payout may be refused.

At our age it’s surprisingly cheap, I declared all the mods on the M3, suspension, wheels engine change which added another 110bhp and it was £60. Been honest with the X5 as well

The picture is very flattering. The rear arches need doing, and for unknown reasons it has 3 wheels which are 8.5 x 18 and 1 which is 8 x 18. Unfortunately the spare is a space saver. Tyre are in excess of 10 years. Callipers are very rusty, I’m going to try the electrolysis procedure to derust. The interior is tatty and has some mould but is coming along nicely. I swap between the Alpina and the R32 as I acquire bits and pieces.
Finally the X5 has some faults, the auxiliary water pump has died and the bonnet cable has snapped.
